On February 25, 2021, deputies with the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check request at a residence on Horseshoe Drive. Upon arrival, officers encountered Donald Francis Hairston in an agitated state. Hairston fled into the home and barricaded himself inside. He later emerged from the house armed with a gun, and shots were fired at the officers. In response, a deputy shot and killed Hairston.

On February 25, 2021, at approximately 11 p.m., a deputy with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office was traveling westbound on VA-42 when he noticed a vehicle approaching quickly from behind. The vehicle tailgated the deputy, passed him on a double-yellow line, and accelerated to 85 mph. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle but began a pursuit when the driver allegedly improperly passed another motorist and drove on the wrong side of the road, reaching speeds of 80-100 mph. The driver lost control of the vehicle, a 1993 Lincoln Town Car driven by Ronald Alvin Colvin, which ran off the road, struck a mailbox, spun across the road, hit a ditch, became airborne, and hit a utility pole. Colvin was killed in the crash.

On February 8, 2021, Jonathan O'quin entered Hillcom and fired multiple rounds, killing Kenny Hill in his apartment above the business. A deputy pursued O'quin for about three miles before O'quin turned onto Bartlick Road. O'quin stopped at Bartlick Bridge, got out of the vehicle, and fired multiple rounds at the deputy. The deputy returned fire but did not hit him. O'quin then fatally shot himself in the head with a high-powered rifle.

On 02/05/2021, an argument involving three people occurred in the bar area of a restaurant on East Church Street in Martinsville. The individuals exited the restaurant, where two of them began firing guns at each other. A Martinsville police officer on patrol nearby responded after hearing gunfire. During the encounter, the officer opened fire toward the armed individuals, striking one man. The wounded individual later died from gunshot injuries. The incident was referred for investigation, which was pending at the time.

On 01/09/2021 at approximately 4:35 a.m., a Virginia State Police trooper observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 64 in Henrico County. Police said a pursuit followed, reaching speeds well over 100 miles per hour. The vehicle left the roadway and slid down an embankment into the median near mile marker 173. Two troopers approached the vehicle. According to police accounts, Xzavier Deyonté Hill displayed a firearm during the encounter, and troopers opened fire, killing him. A grand jury later declined to indict the troopers involved. Hill’s family filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit challenging the circumstances of the shooting.
