On 12/12/2023 at about 11:24 p.m., Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted a traffic stop on a suspected DUI driver near 112th Street East and Vickery Avenue East. The driver did not stop and deputies escalated a chase to the dead end of the 4300 block of East Vickery Avenue. Deputies reported being fired upon and returned gunfire. Police started a standoff ensued and officers eventually removed the man from the vehicle. The man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries and later died of multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Kennewick PD alleged that Adam Paul Klei killed his brother-in-law and was seen walking in the area of 44th and Gum Street in Kennewick. Police followed him with drones and K9s until they found him in a ravine in the woods. Police allege that they fired beanbags and Klei shot and killed himself under police duress. Police allege that Klei, a pharmacist, and the brother-in-law may have been involved in criminal activity.

Pierce County deputies chased a vehicle and shot and killed the man near the South Hill Mall. Police only said that he had a warrant for a violent felony. Walla Walla County deputies escalated a chase until the driver crashed into a power pole and died. The Sheriff’s Department did not say why they chased the man, merely stated they tried to arrest him. Washington State originally in April of 2021 prohibited almost all police pursuits. This was fought by the GOP and police unions and in 2023, the Washington State Legislature passed and governor Jay Inslee signed a reversal of many of the pursuit restrictions, allowing pursuits in certain cases. Kent PD arrived at a landlord dispute call and found a man with life-threatening injuries in front of his home. When Kent PD and SWAT surrounded the home and started a standoff, they heard 7 or 8 pops. The woman had committed suicide under police duress. It is unclear how that was done with 7 or 8 shots. Kent Police Department were called when two men abandoned a vehicle in someone’s driveway and told the homeowner they were out of gas and going to walk to get some. Police arrived and discovered the abandoned vehicle had been stolen and apparently left in the driveway undamaged. Police followed the men and found them running. Kent PD shot and killed an unnamed man who was found hiding behind a house. Police claimed he had a knife on him. No word if he had tried to use it as he was reported as only running away when shot and killed. Police fired six shots into him.

Thurston County deputies came upon a group of people doing donuts in the street. When police arrived, a car fled and police escalated a high-speed chase. Police “called off the chase” and the fleeing vehicle crashed shortly thereafter, killing the passenger, Omar D. Chavez-Leyva.

A Snohomish County deputy stopped a vehicle that police felt was involved in possible auto theft. When the traffic stopped the vehicle and asked the mail driver to exit the car, a female in the passenger seat moved to the driver seat and drove away. On 09/20/2023, Pullman Police responded to a report of a man with a gun near Golden Hills Dr and Wawawai Rd. Officers attempted to locate him, leading to a standoff situation while law enforcement actively searched and contained the area. During the incident, the man reportedly fired a shot while officers were trying to find him. As police presence and containment continued, the man shot himself and died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Reporting indicated one handgun involved and confirmed the death occurred during the active law enforcement standoff.

On 08/28/2023, at approximately 11:27 p.m., King County Sheriff's Office received a report of an armed carjacking near Southeast 288th Street and 228th Avenue Southeast in Maple Valley. The reporting driver said another vehicle had intentionally rear-ended his silver Hyundai. Police alleged that someone from the striking vehicle then got out with a gun and took the Hyundai. No gunfire was reported during the carjacking.

King County deputies began searching for the Hyundai, and two Black Diamond Police Department officers responded to assist. A Black Diamond officer traveling west in the 22000 block of Southeast 296th Street saw a silver Hyundai traveling rapidly in the opposite direction. The officer slowed and turned around, but by the time the maneuver was completed, the Hyundai was no longer visible.

The officer continued looking for the Hyundai. A King County deputy radioed that the stolen vehicle might be at Lake Sawyer Grocery, prompting officers to respond there, but the vehicle at that location was not the Hyundai they were seeking.

A Black Diamond officer then returned toward the area where the Hyundai had last been seen. Officers found it off the roadway near Southeast 297th Street and 224th Avenue Southeast, where it had crashed into a tree. The Hyundai contained three juveniles believed to be approximately 15 to 17 years old.

Police and firefighters attempted to save the juvenile driver. The driver was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and died. A teenage girl and teenage boy who had been passengers in the Hyundai were also transported to Harborview with life-threatening injuries; contemporary reporting described one as being in serious condition and the other in critical condition.

The Hyundai involved in the fatal crash was subsequently determined to have previously been stolen from Kent. King County Sheriff's Office investigated the alleged armed carjacking, while Washington State Patrol investigated the fatal collision.

Importantly, later Black Diamond Police Department records establish that this incident was not classified as a police vehicle pursuit. The department's 2023 annual report states that Black Diamond police recorded zero vehicle pursuits during 2023. It documented five incidents in which drivers continued driving after officers attempted traffic stops, but stated that officers stopped rather than initiating pursuits in each instance.

The available chronology is consistent with that distinction. The Black Diamond officer saw the Hyundai pass in the opposite direction, turned around after it passed, but had already lost sight of it. Police then searched for the vehicle and later discovered it crashed into the tree. The available evidence therefore does not establish a continuous police pursuit immediately preceding the fatal crash.

On 08/28/2023, shortly after noon, Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 1300 block of Ocean Beach Road near Copalis Crossing after a 911 caller reported that a man had shot and killed himself. When deputies were dispatched, however, the man was still alive. A second caller, a woman at the location, contacted 911 shortly afterward and reported that the man was experiencing a mental health crisis, was heavily armed and needed assistance.

The residence was in an isolated area without nearby neighbors. Deputies arrived and attempted to contact the man, who was inside a trailer. While deputies were outside, they heard two gunshots coming from the trailer. Deputies evacuated two other people from the property.

According to the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, the man then fired a .45-caliber handgun toward responding deputies. One bullet struck a sheriff’s patrol vehicle. No deputy was struck by the gunfire.

The Sheriff’s Office activated its Crisis Response Unit and deployed an armored vehicle to the property. The specialized unit arrived at approximately 1:30 p.m. More than 20 law-enforcement officers ultimately responded, including eight Grays Harbor County sheriff’s deputies and personnel from the Hoquiam, Aberdeen and Montesano police departments and Washington State Patrol. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officers closed the roadway around the property.

Law-enforcement personnel attempted to negotiate with the man by telephone during the standoff. The telephone conversation eventually ended abruptly. The Crisis Response Unit subsequently approached the trailer and found the man dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Grays Harbor County Coroner George Kelley subsequently established that the man was a 52-year-old Hoquiam resident. Kelley determined that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at approximately 2:45 p.m. The coroner described him as a person experiencing a crisis.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office completed its investigation of the incident. Undersheriff Kevin Schrader said no criminal charges would result from the case.

On 08/14/2023, Walla Walla County deputies attempted to serve a warrant at a residence in the 13970 block of Merry Lane in Burbank. Philip Stroh, 65, barricaded himself inside the home, initiating an overnight standoff that began on 08/13/2023 and continued into the next day. Deputies established a perimeter and attempted to negotiate while Stroh remained inside and armed. During the confrontation with law enforcement outside, Stroh shot himself. He died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities reported one firearm was involved. The address reported in early coverage was approximate and based on video footage from the area. The Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing the incident.

On 08/08/2023, at approximately 3:10 p.m., Tacoma Police Department officers responded to the 9400 block of South D Street after receiving reports that 41-year-old Cody Kuzior had fired multiple gunshots in the neighborhood, striking two occupied homes. Patrol officers attempted to contact Kuzior, who remained at the residence and did not comply with commands. Because of the reports of gunfire and the inability to safely resolve the situation, officers requested the Tacoma Police SWAT Team.
SWAT officers responded with armored vehicles and spent more than an hour attempting to negotiate with Kuzior. According to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team (PCFIT), repeated efforts to de-escalate the encounter were unsuccessful. At approximately 4:38 p.m., Kuzior fired additional shots toward officers. SWAT officers returned fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
On August 11, 2023, the Pierce County Medical Examiner identified the deceased as Cody Kuzior, age 41, of Tacoma. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death homicide.
The Pierce County Force Investigation Team conducted the independent investigation. On September 15, 2023, investigators identified the officer who fired the fatal shots as Officer Brent Roberts. Roberts was a 39-year-old Tacoma Police officer with nearly 18 years of service, more than eight years assigned to the SWAT Team, and also served as a firearms instructor, range safety officer, and reality-based training instructor. The investigation remained active through 2024 before being completed.

On 08/02/2023, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Bayfield Police Department Officer Lane Koltermann was driving a marked squad car on State Highway 13 near West Bresette Hill Road while traveling toward Red Cliff when his vehicle struck pedestrian Anthony J. Gardner. Bayfield County Sheriff's Office deputies responded and found Gardner dead at the scene. Gardner was a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Due to the fatality involving a police vehicle, the Ashland County Sheriff's Office led the investigation with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol. Officer Koltermann was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

On 07/30/2023, Sunnyside Police Department officers responded to the 700 block of South 8th Street after receiving reports that 33-year-old Omar Sosa was armed inside an apartment and preventing several people from leaving. Officers evacuated nearby residents and established a perimeter. The Yakima Regional SWAT Team, Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Grandview Police Department, and Washington State Patrol responded to assist. Crisis negotiators attempted to persuade Sosa to surrender during a standoff that lasted several hours. According to police, several people were able to safely leave the apartment during the incident.
After repeated efforts to contact Sosa, SWAT officers entered the apartment and found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Yakima County Coroner ruled his death a suicide. The Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit conducted the investigation into the incident.

On 06/29/2023, Bohdan Vetrov, a 57 year old commercial truck driver and father of seven dependent children, was killed on Interstate 5 in Lakewood, Washington, after Lakewood police initiated and continued a vehicle pursuit that ended in a catastrophic collision with his semi truck.
According to reporting, Lakewood police were pursuing a passenger vehicle connected to an alleged robbery. Officers escalated the encounter into a high speed chase that entered Interstate 5 traffic. During the pursuit, the fleeing vehicle struck Vetrov’s 18 wheeler with significant force. Vetrov was killed as a direct result of the crash.
The driver and occupants of the pursued vehicle survived. Bohdan Vetrov, who was not involved in any police action and was lawfully operating his commercial vehicle, died at the scene.
Public reporting indicates the pursuit was active at the time of the collision, raising questions about why the chase was initiated, why it was continued onto a major interstate, and whether the alleged underlying offense justified the level of risk imposed on the public.
The case has since escalated into major civil litigation. Lawsuits filed by Vetrov’s family allege that Lakewood police created an unreasonable danger by initiating and continuing the pursuit in violation of Washington State pursuit standards, departmental policy, and basic public safety principles. The family argues that officers failed to adequately weigh the severity of the alleged crime against the foreseeable risk to uninvolved motorists, including commercial drivers operating large vehicles with limited maneuverability.
The lawsuit further alleges that police had alternative options available, including delayed apprehension and investigative follow up, rather than immediate pursuit through active interstate traffic. The death of Bohdan Vetrov is cited as a foreseeable and preventable outcome of pursuit decisions made by Lakewood police that morning.
Vetrov was described by family as a working truck driver supporting seven children. His death removed the family’s primary provider and has had lasting financial and emotional consequences.
The incident has drawn broader scrutiny of police pursuit practices in Washington, particularly in cases involving nonviolent property crimes and the use of high speed chases on major highways.

The Othello Police Department came to arrest 29-year-old Ramon O. Morfin of Warden, Washington, for alleged harassment. Morfin was also wanted on an outstanding state Department of Corrections warrant. An Othello police officer and 3 Adams County deputies went to his work place in the 700 block of South Kulm Road, Othello, Washington, to arrest him. The officer and deputies made contact with Morfin outside the business. During the attempted arrest, Morfin unexpectedly opened fire at the group of officers. They shot and killed him.

Joel Nelson, a 41-year-old White man, died on June 17, 2023, while in custody at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle, Washington. Joshua James Wilson, 43, was believed to be involved in an armed robbery. Vancouver PD chased him as he exited a Safeway store. He was captured on video pointing a gun at police. They shot and killed him.

Jeffrey Reeder was shot Sunday night by Benton County deputy Elias after he attempted to carjack a person near the Columbia Center Mall in Kennewickjust after 8:30 p.m. on 06/04/2023.On Columbia Center Boulevard, they crashed the car onto the lawn of the Bank of America near Quinault Avenue near the mall. The driver then got out of the car and began running towards the mall with a gun in their hand, tried to carjack another vehicle. Police shot and killed him.
This was the second killing for Officer Elias Perez. He had killed Ryan Kauffman in August 2021.

Spokane County deputies were looking for Bjorn Manycolors with an arrest warrant. Police allege that he produced a gun and fled on foot. Deputies Brent Miller and Matthew Pearson shot and killed him. This was the second killing since 2020 for Officer Brent Miller. Kent PD on April 18 were sent to the 12200 block of Southeast 259th Place for a report of a verbal dispute with a roommate. Wallace was reportedly intoxicated, pouring gasoline on himself. When police arrived, he approached them with a running circular saw. Kent PD shot and killed him.

Jessica Sanders was a passenger in a car being pursued by police after the driver, Antonio De Jesus Martinez, allegedly fired a shot at a Kennewick police officer and deputies began chasing him.Police allege that Martinez was chased directly into another Benton County deputy’s police car at the intersection of Eighth Place and Vancouver Street.
