The first officer to arrive made contact with 50-year-old Adrian Mullin. Police stated the officer perceived a threat and fired at least one round, striking Mullin. When SWAT entered, they found 25-year-old Joshua Caleb Hunt deceased. Another individual, Anthony C. Caldwell-Manning, 44, was arrested and charged with drug trafficking, weapons possession, and animal cruelty. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the case.

On October 2, 2025, at approximately 4:11 p.m., Dare Central Communications received a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible crime in progress in the 200 block of Mother Vineyard Road. Manteo Police Officers responded with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, officers were confronted by 49-year-old Denny Winslow who was reportedly armed. An officer opened fire, striking Winslow. Winslow was pronounced deceased at the scene. She had become unhoused with her son after hurricane Ian and had experienced a number of challenges prior to being killed by police.
