Denver PD chased a man on a motorcycle on February 2, 2023, deliberately struck the motorcycle. A video obtained by the Denver Gazette Wednesday showed the responding officer's patrol car ramming into the motorcyclist, causing him to crash. He then fled on foot. Originally, police claimed that Stephen Poolson Jr., 41, then produced a gun, at which point the responding officer shot him. Poolson died later at the hospital. Police had claimed he crashed on his own and died in the crash and had to correct this to Poolson having been deliberately hit by a patrol car and being shot when he ran. The officer has not been charged.

On February 1, 2023, at about 1:35 a.m. NY State Police observed a vehicle driving erratically on Washington Avenue Extension in Albany, NY. The vehicle matched a car from an earlier pursuit. Troopers had attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver Jason S. Benn, did not stop. A chase was escalated during which Benn hit several parked vehicles. Police claim to have “called off the chase” at 1:44 a.m. Shortly thereafter, troopers found Benn crashed in Knox, NY.He had sustained severe injuries and died in the hospital shortly thereafter. Police allege that Benn did not have the owner’s permission to drive the car and had some drugs in the car. Benn had had prior bad experience with the police which may help explain why he ran from police.

On January 30, 2023, at approximately 9:30 PM, Virginia Beach Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic incident involving 48-year-old Craig Alan Byl, who was armed with multiple firearms and threatening harm to himself and others at a residence on Decathlon Drive.

Upon arrival, officers safely evacuated a female from the residence and established dialogue with Byl, who was observed entering and exiting the home while pointing a shotgun at himself. Negotiations continued for nearly three hours. Around 12:14 AM on January 31, Byl exited the residence with a handgun pointed at his head and continued to brandish different firearms over the next hour.

At approximately 1:15 AM, officers deployed less-lethal munitions in an attempt to subdue Byl, but these measures were ineffective. Byl retreated into the residence and fired multiple rounds at officers through windows using a shotgun and a handgun. Officers returned fire. After the exchange, the VBPD SWAT unit entered the home and found Byl deceased just inside the front door. A shotgun, a 9mm pistol, and several spent cartridge cases were recovered at the scene.

The preliminary investigation suggests that Byl's fatal injuries were the result of police gunfire; however, the official cause of death will be determined by the Norfolk Medical Examiner's Office. No officers were injured during the incident. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of both criminal and administrative investigations to assess compliance with departmental policies and training.

A trespassing call turned into a man locking himself in withJackson County Sheriff’s deputies bearing down on William E. Beach. He was found to be noncompliant with house arrest for a previous incident of hitting an officer. This time, police tracked him to an unauthorized location in violation of his house arrest. Police breached the door and claim that Beach pointed a gun. Police deployed a taser and fired shots. Beach died in the hospital several hours later. He is not accused of any crimes and police gave “trespassing” outside of the boundaries of house arrest as reason that escalated a chain of events.
