On December 14, 2021, law enforcement attempted to stop Bobby Lee Byrd Jr., 40, in Mitchell County, North Carolina, leading to a vehicle pursuit. On 12/14/2021, at approximately 6:48 a.m., Dayton Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting near Hoover Avenue and Evergreen Avenue, where a 49-year-old man was allegedly shot in the leg by William Gardner, who had fired multiple shots at the man while he was walking his dog. Gardner then retreated to his home.

SWAT officers established a perimeter and pressured Gardner for hours. Approximately three hours later, Gardner came out of his home with a handgun. Police alleged that he walked toward SWAT officers and that they feared for their lives. Multiple SWAT officers fired assault rifles, killing Gardner.

On December 13, 2021, at approximately 9:00 a.m., deputies from the Torrance County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on West Alan Ayers Road in Estancia. A caller reported that a male, wearing a black hoodie and a red facemask, entered her backyard and fired at least one shot before fleeing westbound on West Alan Ayers Road. A deputy located the man near West Alan Ayers Road and Lassiter Road. For reasons still under investigation, the deputy discharged his duty weapon at least once, striking the man. Despite administering first aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is leading the investigation into the incident.

On December 11, 2021, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Kokomo Police attempted to stop a 2016 Nissan in the area of Mulberry and Washington Streets. The vehicle did not stop, and officers initiated a pursuit. After losing sight of the vehicle, officers terminated the chase. Shortly thereafter, police were dispatched to a crash at North Berkley Road and West Jefferson Street. The Nissan had collided with a Dodge Ram while heading westbound. Sydney Leigh Glenn, a 24-year-old passenger in the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger were injured, as was the driver of the Dodge Ram.

On 12/08/2021, Stockton Police responded to reports of gunfire outside police headquarters on East Market Street and contacted Angelo Weitz in front of the building. Officers reported he held a handgun during the interaction. He lay on the ground and then stood up while still holding the firearm. Officers opened fire and struck him. He died on the street outside the building. Authorities opened investigation of the shooting and reported no charges at the time of public reporting.

On 12/08/2021, officers responded to a report from a woman who stated a man followed her vehicle through Iowa Falls and struck her car. Officers located Jared Lynn Risius at the intersection of Siloam Avenue and River Street and ordered him out of his vehicle. Officers reported he displayed a shotgun and remained inside the vehicle. Officers opened fire during the confrontation and struck him. He died at the intersection. Authorities initiated investigation of the shooting and reported no charges at the time of public reporting.

Deputies reported she attacked another person with a knife inside the residence. A deputy opened fire and struck her. She died at the residence. On December 7, 2021, Fort Worth police officers responded to a 911 call from 29-year-old Mitchell Robert Davis, who reported feeling possessed and expressed fear of harming others. Upon arrival near his residence at 10442 Bear Creek Trail, officers encountered Davis, who was armed with an Airsoft gun. Davis reportedly pointed the replica at the officers. They opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Davis had a history of mental health struggles.

On December 7, 2021, at approximately 7:30 a.m., a concerned neighbor contacted the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, reporting that 88-year-old Ronald Ehrich had not been seen for two days. Deputies responded to his residence on Longcrest Drive. Deputy Anastacia Castillo, who had been with the department since 2015, entered the home to conduct a welfare check. As she ascended the stairs, she knocked on a bedroom door and announced her presence. When there was no response, she knocked again and heard a male voice indicating he was armed. Ehrich then opened the door and advanced toward Deputy Castillo with a firearm. Fearing for her life, Deputy Castillo discharged her service weapon, fatally wounding Ehrich. He was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital. Deputy Castillo had no prior history of using deadly force. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.

On December 7, 2021, at approximately 5:43 p.m., Sergeant Chris Lewis of the Elizabethtown Police Department responded to a domestic violence investigation on Pleasant View Drive. Upon arrival, Sergeant Lewis encountered Gary McCormick. An altercation ensued, during which McCormick disarmed Sergeant Lewis of his taser and allegedly attempted to use it on him. In response, Sergeant Lewis opened fire, fatally wounding McCormick. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin County Coroner.

On 12/07/2021, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police troopers encountered a vehicle stopped on a highway ramp. As troopers approached, the driver, Julian A. Rodriguez, 21, drove away. Police escalated a pursuit through Lehigh County into Berks County. Rodriguez lost control of the vehicle while attempting to exit Interstate 78 at Exit 40 in Greenwich Township and crashed. He was killed in the crash. The incident is under investigation.

On December 7, 2021, at approximately 9:00 p.m., deputies from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic violence call at the Las Mañanitas apartment complex near Coors and Montaño in Albuquerque. The victim had previously reported a domestic violence incident at an Allsup's gas station earlier in the day. Upon arrival, deputies arrested Mario Armando Diaz, 41, at the apartment complex. While being transported in a patrol vehicle, Diaz managed to slip one hand out of his handcuffs and attempted to flee. A brief foot pursuit ensued, leading to a physical altercation between Diaz and Deputy Taylor Feist. During the struggle, Deputy Feist called out that Diaz had her gun. In response, Deputy Dereck Gallegos fired two shots, fatally wounding Diaz. The incident was captured on body-worn cameras and a street camera.

An officer saw a van driving in reverse on Southeast 14th Street before it entered a parking lot. The officer stopped the van and questioned the driver, who gave a false name. The driver, identified as Donald Hill, ran from the scene on foot. The officer chased Hill, and they began struggling. Around 8 p.m., the officer radioed for help, reporting a violent encounter. As Hill ran into Southeast 14th Street, the officer followed. A vehicle struck both Hill and the officer. Hill died at the scene, and the officer suffered injuries.

On 12/06/2021, Portland Police responded to reports of a home invasion robbery followed by vehicle thefts across the area and located Brandon Keck driving a stolen vehicle. Officers followed the vehicle onto Interstate 5 near Columbia Boulevard after reports he attempted additional carjackings on the roadway. Police reported Keck fired a weapon at occupants of another vehicle. Officers opened fire during the confrontation and struck him. He died on the freeway. A grand jury later reviewed the shooting and determined the use of force complied with law.

On December 6, 2021, Jose Mario Velez, 47, of Lompoc died after a pursuit initiated by Vandenberg Space Force Base Security Forces. Officers attempted a traffic stop due to erratic driving, but Velez did not stop. He was traveling northbound on Highway 1 when he lost control near the "Y" interchange with Highway 135, struck a milepost, became airborne, and went off an embankment. His vehicle landed on its roof and slid into a guardrail. He was declared dead at the scene.
