On April 13, 2021, Toms River police pursued a stolen vehicle driven by a 14-year-old boy. The pursuit ended when the car left the roadway and struck a tree in the 1300 block of Old Freehold Road. The vehicle was heavily damaged and caught fire. The 14-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene along with a 14-year-old female passenger. On April 13, 2021, officers with the Tontitown Police Department attempted to stop a stolen Toyota 4Runner. The vehicle, driven by an unidentified individual, fled at high speed and failed to negotiate a turn on Bush Creek Road near US 412. The 4Runner crashed into a tree and burst into flames. Chassadee Costales, who was in the vehicle, died early that morning from her injuries. Officers noted one of their own was treated for minor injuries after entering the burning vehicle to assist survivors.

On 04/13/2021, San Diego police shot and killed 36 year old Christopher Templo Marquez following a prolonged standoff that moved through multiple parts of the city and ended near San Diego High School. Police reported that officers were searching for Marquez after reports of gunfire during an earlier encounter. Marquez took cover inside a dumpster on the school campus, where police maintained a perimeter for approximately 11 hours.
During the standoff, police stated that Marquez was accompanied by a woman. As the standoff continued, officers reported observing Marquez reposition the woman in a way they believed placed her at risk. Two police snipers opened fire, killing Marquez at the scene. The woman was not shot.

On 04/13/2021, Garden City police shot and killed 58 year old Thomas Andrew Bunde during a response to a domestic disturbance at a residence on North Quinella Court. Around 12:52 a.m., three patrol officers arrived at the home. Bunde exited the residence while holding a handgun and spoke to officers. During the encounter, officers opened fire. Bunde was shot by two officers and died at the scene.
The Ada County Prosecutor reviewed the shooting and ruled the officers’ use of deadly force justified. No criminal charges were filed against the officers involved.

On 04/13/2021, Honolulu police shot and killed 29 year old Lindani Myeni during an encounter outside a residence on Coelho Way. Officers responded to a call reporting a man sitting in a vehicle outside a woman’s home. Officers approached Myeni and attempted to detain him. During the encounter, an officer deployed a Taser, and other officers opened fire. Myeni was struck and died at the scene.
Body camera footage released later showed officers converging on Myeni at close range during the encounter. The Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney reviewed the case and ruled the use of deadly force justified. No officers were charged. Myeni’s family filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit against the City and County of Honolulu. The lawsuit was later dismissed by a judge.

On April 13, 2021, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a McFarland Police officer attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by Cam-Ron P. M. Poelinitz for speeding. Shortly after the attempted stop, the vehicle clipped one house and crashed into another. Poelinitz was killed in the crash, and four other people in the vehicle were taken to the hospital. Fortunately, no one in either house was injured in the crash.

The first call provided only a phone number, while the second gave a street address in the 23000 block of Hollywood Road in Leonardtown. Upon arrival, Trooper Joseph Azzari confronted Peyton Ham in the driveway. Azzari shot Ham twice, resulting in his death.

On April 12, 2021, officers from the Georgia State Patrol attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2015 Nissan Sentra for speeding at 111 mph on Interstate 20 in Bremen, Georgia. The driver, Aaron JuJuan Shelton, fled, and the officers escalated a high-speed pursuit through Carroll County. During the chase, the passenger, Pier Alexander Shelton, 28, leaned out of the vehicle and fired an AK-47-style rifle at pursuing officers, striking and disabling a patrol car. The pursuit continued through Carrollton and into Villa Rica, where the vehicle crashed near Villa Rica Elementary School. Both occupants fled on foot. On April 12, 2021, at approximately 1:36 a.m., Angelina Sue Raad, a 38-year-old white female, was driving her vehicle the wrong way on the inner loop of New Circle Road near Harrodsburg Road in Lexington, Kentucky. She collided head-on with a police cruiser driven by Officer Dawn Miller, who was off duty and heading home after her shift. Both drivers were extricated from their vehicles and transported to a local hospital. Raad was pronounced deceased at around 4 a.m., while Officer Miller sustained serious injuries but was reported to be in stable condition.

On April 11, 2021, officers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Findlay Police Department initiated a high-speed pursuit of a vehicle driven by Trevor Clark, 22, following a domestic violence incident in North Baltimore, Ohio. The officers escalated the situation into a high-speed pursuit through Findlay, during which Clark turned off his headlights and reached speeds of 95 mph on surface roads. On 04/11/2021, Del Rio police shot and killed 34 year old Crystal Jean Alcozer following a call involving a reported disturbance at a residence on West Gutierrez Street. Residents told police that a woman carrying a weapon attempted to take an item from their yard and tried to force her way into the home. By the time officers arrived, Alcozer had left the area on foot.
Police located Alcozer a short distance away near Gillis Avenue. During the encounter that followed, officers opened fire and shot her. Alcozer, a Del Rio resident, was transported for medical care and later died from her injuries. Public obituary records identified Alcozer and marked her death the day after the shooting. A woman reported that her boyfriend, 30-year-old Joshua Alexander Mitchell, had sexually abused a child and threatened to kill her. She also informed deputies that Mitchell was armed.

Witnesses described the shooter as a heavyset male adult leaving the area in an older model minivan. At around 11:01 p.m., officers located a vehicle matching this description on Harps Street near Fourth Street, with Guillermo "Memo" Amezcua, 48, seated in the driver’s seat. Officers issued multiple commands over approximately five minutes for Amezcua to show his hands. Police alleged that Amezcua was uncooperative and observed manipulating an unknown object. To gain compliance, an officer deployed three less-lethal stun bags aimed at the rear window area of the vehicle, but these attempts were unsuccessful. At approximately 11:06 p.m., police reported observing a muzzle flash consistent with a gunshot from inside the vehicle. Officers opened fire, fatally striking Amezcua, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department investigated the officer-involved shooting. According to an autopsy report dated 04/14/2021, Amezcua sustained five gunshot wounds, with three being fatal. San Marcos Police Department officers responded to a report of a man walking in traffic on southbound I-35 around 12:19 a.m. Upon arrival, officers saw Rescue Eram walking along the retaining wall and crossing traffic. On 04/09/2021, a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed 40 year old Gabriel Munoz Jr. along Interstate 10 near Whitewater. A motorist called police to report a man throwing rocks at passing vehicles. On 04/09/2021, Stephenson County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed 52 year old David William Determan during a standoff at Citizens State Bank in Lena. Deputies responded around 9:14 a.m. after Determan entered the bank holding a firearm. After a deputy arrived on scene, Determan fired a round into the air outside the bank and remained in conversation with officers while holding the weapon. During the encounter, Determan lifted the firearm in the direction of deputies. Deputies opened fire and killed him at the scene. Authorities closed the downtown area during the response.

On April 9, 2021, U.S. Deputy Marshals responded to a residence on the 300 block of North Hampton Road in Springfield, Ohio, at sunrise to arrest 50-year-old Douglas C. Barton. Barton was wanted for allegedly threatening a judge.

San Bernardino deputies escalated a chase in Apple Valley. The driver did not stop and drove eastbound on Yucca Loma Road. Police continued to chase him into a residential area near Iroquois Road. Around 3:50 p.m., while still being chased, the vehicle crashed into a tree and a block wall. The driver was pronounced dead at the crash site. A female passenger sustained injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center. The pursuit was initiated after deputies attempted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation.

Two men, a woman, and a child were parked at the entrance of an apartment complex when officers stopped to investigate. While the driver was outside the car speaking with officers, the other man in the car drove off, reportedly hitting an officer. Police later found the car at the Valencia Square Apartments. Someone from an apartment reportedly informed officers that a man inside had hostages. As police waited outside, Raheem Reeder reportedly jumped from the second story and waved a gun at officers, who shot and killed him.

Reporting states the off-duty Capitol Police investigator was under the influence of alcohol and later pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI. was charged and pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. In August 2023, a Christian County judge sentenced Hodson to 18 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, to be served at 85%, followed by 18 months of mandatory supervised release. He began serving that sentence immediately and is eligible for release around 2038.

On April 7, 2021, around 6:45 p.m., Philadelphia Police officers conducted a traffic stop on a blue Kia Optima in the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue after it failed to stop at a stop sign. The vehicle had four occupants. Upon running their information, officers found that two individuals, including 24-year-old James "Poppie" Alexander, had outstanding warrants. As officers attempted to remove Alexander from the vehicle, he allegedly drew a firearm and fired at them, striking Officer Matthew Ponente in the foot. Alexander then exited the vehicle and reportedly fired additional rounds at the officers. In response, Officers Christopher Burton, Charles McCairns, Michael Braun, David Tamamoto, and Matthew Ponente discharged their weapons, fatally wounding Alexander.

On April 7, 2021, officers with the New Orleans Police Department attempted to stop a white sedan for a traffic violation. The driver refused to stop, and police escalated a high-speed pursuit along Chef Menteur Highway near Read Boulevard. During the chase, the driver lost control and crashed into a marked patrol car. The man was critically injured and later died from his injuries. The New Orleans Police Department’s Force Investigation Team is conducting the investigation.

At about 4 a.m. on April 7, 2021, a Dodge truck, driven by off-duty Officer Christopher Carson, was traveling southbound on U.S. 75 in a portion of the roadway under construction. The vehicle struck Noah Joseph Ford, who was in the main lanes of the highway. Ford was killed in the incident.

On 04/07/2021, Daly City police shot and killed 44 year old Roger Cornelius Allen during an encounter on Niantic Avenue. Police approached Allen’s vehicle after observing it stopped with a flat tire. During the contact, officers saw an object inside the vehicle that they believed to be a firearm. Police attempted to remove Allen from the vehicle. During the encounter, officers opened fire and shot Allen. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later stated that the object officers believed to be a gun was a replica firearm. The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the shooting and ruled it justified.

Both Williams and Johnson attempted to flee in a vehicle, at which point Dixon shot and killed them. Following the incident, Dixon was charged with second-degree murder.
