On 05/12/2021, 19-year-old Hannah Marie Pimentel of Clovis was killed when a black Ford Fusion fleeing a California Highway Patrol officer crashed into the BMW she was driving near Stanislaus and N streets in downtown Fresno.

At approximately 3 p.m., a CHP officer assigned to the Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium stopped the Ford in Chinatown while looking for a man wanted for weapons violations. The driver initially stopped but accelerated away as the officer approached, and the officer pursued him through downtown Fresno.

During the pursuit, the fleeing driver threw a loaded AR-15 rifle from the driver's-side window and drove the wrong way on a one-way street. The CHP officer eventually lost sight of the Ford. A few blocks later, the officer saw smoke and reached the intersection of Stanislaus and N streets, where the Ford had crashed into Pimentel's BMW.

Pimentel sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The fleeing driver abandoned the Ford and ran from the crash, prompting a police search and lockdown at nearby Lowell Elementary School.

On May 12, 2021, around 5 p.m., a 52-year-old man was reportedly barricaded inside a vehicle near 173rd Street South and A Street South in Spanaway, Washington. Troopers were dispatched to locate Philip Stanley Watros, who was reportedly armed and making homicidal and suicidal threats to an estranged girlfriend. Officers located him and his vehicle at Mexico Community Park. Due to the nature of the threats and concerns for public safety, officers established a perimeter around the area. After a 12-hour standoff, Watros reportedly shot and killed himself with a rifle.

On 05/11/2021, Stockton Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on La Cresta Way in Stockton, California. During the response, Officer Jimmy Inn was shot and killed. Police reported that Lance Lowe was involved in an exchange of gunfire with officers at the scene and reentered the residence. Lowe later exited the home holding his child. A bystander intervened and restrained Lowe. Police then shot Lowe. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 05/10/2021 shortly before 2:00 a.m., Trashawn Blake Harrison, 15, of Abbeville was one of four juvenile passengers riding in a Ford Explorer traveling north on U.S. Highway 167 near Louisiana Highway 749 in St. Landry Parish. Louisiana State Police later determined that the Explorer had been stolen from within the Abbeville city limits several hours earlier. Police did not report knowing that the vehicle was stolen when the pursuit began.

A Louisiana State Police trooper observed the Explorer traveling at high speed and attempted a traffic stop. Police alleged the juvenile driver continued driving and the trooper initiated a pursuit. Severe storms were moving through Acadiana at the time. State Police said the combination of the Explorer's unsafe speed and the inclement weather became sufficiently dangerous that police alleged they discontinued the pursuit. The available public record does not provide a reliable maximum speed, pursuit distance or duration.

A short time after police alleged they discontinued the pursuit, the trooper encountered the wrecked Explorer. The vehicle had left U.S. 167, struck a parked vehicle, overturned and then struck a utility pole before coming to rest. Harrison was ejected from the Explorer and died at the scene.

On May 10, 2021, Shakeela Imonai Johnson was reportedly fleeing from a domestic incident in Henrico County. On 05/10/2021 shortly before 10:00 p.m., Hunter Alan Robinson, 22, was riding a skateboard westbound on Clifty Drive near Rose Street in Madison when he was struck by a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department vehicle driven by off-duty Deputy James T. Webster, 51. Webster was also traveling westbound and was driving his department-issued 2016 Ford Explorer. Robinson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

Indiana State Police assigned Trooper Andrew Garrett of the Versailles District Crash Reconstruction Team to investigate the collision. Investigators also sought the driver of a light-colored SUV or crossover that they believed might have witnessed or otherwise had information about the crash. State Police initially reported that drugs and alcohol were not suspected as contributing factors.

Officers responded to a welfare check at the Spanish Trails Inn around 9:45 p.m. on May 10, 2021, after a man was reportedly refusing to let a woman leave. Upon arrival, officers determined Kalon J. Horton might have been under the influence of an unknown substance and needed medical attention. He was taken into custody without a warrant and transferred to a medical center for a mental evaluation. Horton was released by the hospital overnight. Early the next morning, officers were called to a shooting in progress at an apartment where a woman and two children were present. Officers arrived and announced themselves, requesting the man to come outside. After receiving no response, they entered the apartment, where they shot and killed Horton.

REASON FOR CHASE: Report of throwing rocks at vehicles

On 05/09/2021 at approximately 10:45 p.m., Justin Anaya was near a hotel at Iliff Road and Coors Boulevard in west Albuquerque when Albuquerque police officers approached him after a person reported that a man was throwing rocks at vehicles in the hotel parking lot. APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said officers had already been working proactively in the area when they were flagged down and directed to Anaya.

Anaya ran from the officers on foot. Police said he fled north, climbed or crossed several fences and reached Interstate 40. He entered the eastbound lanes west of Coors Boulevard and was struck by a civilian vehicle while attempting to cross the interstate. Anaya died at the scene.

APD's Motors Unit investigated the traffic collision. Because Anaya died while actively fleeing APD officers, the Multi-Agency Task Force also opened an in-custody death investigation into the police encounter.

On May 9, 2021, deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office pursued a car driven by Ricky G. Cruz, 28, in the northbound lanes of U.S. 395 near Pasco, Washington. On 05/09/2021 at approximately 3:40 p.m., Karli Elizabeth Moore, 23, was sitting in the front passenger seat of a Hyundai Elantra parked on her family's property on Foster Wells Road outside Pasco. A caller reported the Elantra and another vehicle as suspicious and speculated that the occupants might be using or dealing drugs. Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Mona Bolanos was dispatched to investigate. Police had not established that a crime had occurred.

Bolanos approached the Elantra and reported that driver Ricky G. Cruz-Perez, 28, accelerated away as she reached his window. Deputy Jack Dodson approached from the opposite direction, turned around and joined Bolanos in pursuing the Elantra west on Foster Wells Road. Dodson activated his emergency lights and siren.

The pursuit covered approximately three miles. Deputies reported that Cruz-Perez drove into the opposing lane, nearly struck vehicles head-on and reached more than 100 mph. As the Elantra approached U.S. 395, both deputies said they slowed significantly, but Cruz-Perez ran the stop sign and entered the highway directly in front of a southbound tractor-trailer. The semi struck the passenger side where Moore was sitting, killing her at the scene.

Cruz-Perez was critically injured, transported first to Kadlec Regional Medical Center and then flown to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, where he died from his injuries. Semi driver Harold Matuterivera, 40, was not injured. The pursuit therefore resulted in two deaths.

Karli was born in Kennewick and grew up in Pasco. As a child she was selected for an advanced academic program and later earned high-school and college credits while still in middle school. Her family remembered her as an avid reader who loved animals, music, calligraphy, milkshakes and baking; she had a particular bond with her dog Percy Purse and was described as a “dog whisperer.”

Karli's father, Joe Moore Jr., publicly challenged the decision to pursue. He had left the property to buy his daughter a milkshake and returned to find the aftermath of the crash, initially not knowing Karli was the passenger who had been killed. Three months later, he said the day continually replayed in his mind and questioned how a call about a suspicious vehicle had ended with his daughter's death.

At Sheriff Jim Raymond's request, the Washington State Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team conducted an independent investigation. On 05/09/2021, police in Greenville, South Carolina responded to a 911 call in which David “Whit” Oliver, 44, reported he was being harassed and was on the phone with the operator when gunshots were heard. Officers located Jeffrey Mark Murray a short time later and pulled him over about a mile from the initial incident. According to police statements, Murray exited his vehicle holding a firearm and fired at an officer and a trainee. Officers returned fire and struck Murray. Murray was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Oliver died at the scene of the original shooting.

On 05/09/2021, Glendale Police officers responded to a reported armed robbery near 51st Avenue and Bethany Home Road in Glendale, Arizona. Officers located Maxwell Jerome Davis in the area and attempted to take him into custody. On 05/08/2021 around 6:40 a.m., Baltimore County police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and a house fire in the 7500 block of Maury Road in the Woodlawn and Windsor Mill area. Police identified Everton Garfield Brown, 56, as the shooter. Police said Brown forced entry into a neighbor’s home, stabbed and shot Ismael Quintanilla, 41, and shot Sara Alacote, 37, as she ran from the home. Police said Brown shot two additional neighbors outside, killing Sagar Ghimire, 24, and wounding another man. Police said Brown set his own residence on fire and officers encountered him outside near a parking lot while he had a handgun. Police said officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun. Police said four officers opened fire and shot Brown. Police took him into custody and transported him toward a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. On 05/09/2021 at about 6:13 a.m., a dispatcher watching a security camera feed at the Leicester Police Department saw an SUV repeatedly strike the station’s front entrance. Leicester police responded to the station. Reporting and the Worcester County District Attorney said Zachary Richardson got out of the SUV and aimed what appeared to be a rifle at officers. Officers opened fire and shot Richardson. Officers provided medical aid until EMS arrived. EMS transported Richardson to Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead. Massachusetts State Police investigated under the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.

On 05/08/2021 shortly before 8:00 p.m., Kondwani Rogers, 29, of Frederick County was driving a 2003 Cadillac south on Martinsburg Pike (U.S. 11) when Frederick County Sheriff's Deputy R.W. Marcelle observed the Cadillac near Welltown Road. The Sheriff's Office alleged Rogers was driving recklessly, passing vehicles on the shoulder and traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Marcelle activated his emergency lights and siren and pursued Rogers toward Winchester. (winchesterstar.com)

Rogers continued south before turning onto North Frederick Pike (U.S. 522). Police alleged he continued driving at more than 100 mph and crossed into opposing traffic. Near Route 37, the Cadillac sideswiped a Honda Civic and then collided head-on with a Chevrolet Trailblazer. The Cadillac overturned and caught fire. On 05/08/2021, Clarksville Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Hedge Apple Drive. Police arrived after reports that Adonis Traughber had shot his ex-girlfriend inside the home. When officers arrived at the scene, Traughber came out of the residence and fired shots at police. On May 7, 2021, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Providence Police officers responded to reports of a man screaming in the street near 345 Angell Street, possibly under the influence of narcotics. Upon arrival, they encountered 34-year-old Joseph L. Ventre Jr., who was rolling on the ground and groaning unintelligibly. Emergency responders initiated CPR and transported him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:41 a.m. The Rhode Island Medical Examiner later determined that Ventre's death was due to the combined toxic effects of methamphetamine and methadone during police restraint.

On 05/07/2021, Calaveras County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of an argument between a man and woman at the Sierra Inn Motel in San Andreas. The suspect left the motel before deputies arrived. While deputies were interviewing the woman near an apartment complex on Lewis Avenue, the suspect ambushed and shot a deputy. The deputy and the woman were able to move to safety. Additional responding officers located the suspect inside an apartment holding an elderly female hostage.
