Lorenzo Martin, age 55, was waiting inside the bus shelter at the time. The force of the crash caused the vehicle to strike Martin with devastating impact. Emergency responders arrived quickly but pronounced Martin dead at the scene due to catastrophic blunt force trauma.
The crash scene caused significant damage to the bus shelter and disrupted traffic flow in the area. Witnesses described the vehicle's reckless driving moments before the crash and expressed shock and grief over the innocent bystander's death.
The Milwaukee Police Department launched an internal investigation alongside a review by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. On July 14, 2025, deputies from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office responded to multiple reports of an armed man at the popular Fort Custer Recreation Area near Augusta, Michigan. The situation prompted a large-scale evacuation of the campground and beach area around 5:00 p.m., displacing dozens of visitors and campers for public safety.
Law enforcement established a perimeter and deployed negotiators to engage with the man, who had barricaded himself inside his vehicle parked within the recreation area. Despite ongoing negotiations spanning several hours, the man remained uncooperative and ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the vehicle.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office is overseeing the investigation, with cooperation from state agencies. Body camera footage and communication logs from negotiators are being reviewed to understand the sequence of events and to evaluate the response procedures.
