On January 11, 2021, at approximately 6 a.m., Edinburg Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment in the 1700 block of Orlando Street. Upon arrival, Officer Alex Cruz reported hearing a woman screaming inside the residence. Entering the apartment, Officer Cruz encountered 29-year-old Jesse Daniel Davila allegedly assaulting a woman. According to police statements, Davila ignored commands to stop and advanced toward Officer Cruz, who then discharged his firearm, resulting in Davila's death.

On January 11, 2021, at approximately 5:16 p.m., Butler County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic violence report in the 6800 block of Yoakum Court at the Lakota Pointe Townhomes in Liberty Township. Junius Thomas, had allegedly kicked in the door of a residence, prompting the female occupant to flee and call 911. Upon arrival, deputies found Thomas armed and "extremely agitated." THE SWAT team was deployed. SWAT officers used an armored vehicle to breach the door. Thomas then appeared in the doorway and raised a gun toward the officers, at which point Deputy Ricky Phillips shot and killed Thomas. A subsequent autopsy revealed the presence of methamphetamine in Thomas's system. Four months later, Officer Phillips shot and injured someone during arrest again. A Butler County grand jury reviewed both incidents and declined to issue an indictment, determining that the use of force was justified.

On 01/10/2021 at approximately 4:08 p.m., Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were patrolling in Altadena when a woman flagged them down and reported that she had been stabbed. Deputies then contacted a man nearby who was holding a knife. During the encounter, deputies opened fire, shooting and killing Allen Mirzayan. Mirzayan was pronounced dead at the scene. The stabbing victim was transported for medical treatment. The deputy involved shooting was placed under investigation, and no charges against deputies were announced at the time of reporting.

On 01/10/2021 at approximately 3:37 a.m., Bentonville police officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a family at a residence near NW Bella Vista Road and NW 6th Street. The incident involved a husband, his wife, their two young children, and the husband’s parents. Police reported that the husband’s father was seriously injured and treated by medical personnel. Officers stated that the wife and children were inside the home with Brian Williams. According to police accounts, when officers attempted to make contact, Williams moved toward them while holding a kitchen knife. Three officers opened fire, shooting and killing him. The shooting was investigated, and the district attorney later determined the use of force was justified. No charges were filed against the officers.

On January 10, 2021, around 1:40 a.m., Dyer Police Department officers attempted to stop a black Dodge Charger. The driver of the vehicle fled, leading officers on a pursuit. The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and roll over. Following the crash, the vehicle's two occupants fled on foot. Officers apprehended one individual, while the other, Mark Bivins, 28, continued to flee. During the foot chase, Bivins reportedly shot at officers, who then shot and killed him.

Around 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a domestic incident and attempted to pull over a vehicle. Deputies made contact with Joseph Howell, attempting to negotiate with him. Howell reportedly fired two shots at deputies, leading to a brief pursuit. Deputies used their vehicles to disable Howell's, and shots were exchanged. Deputies shot and killed Howell.

On January 10, 2021, Chickasaw Police Officer Joseph Hand pursued a vehicle that crashed near Interstate 65 and Craft Highway in Chickasaw, killing 18-year-old Kenya Reed, a McIntosh High School senior, who was a passenger in the car. Reed’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, stating that Officer Hand’s conduct was part of “multiple cases” of reckless driving and pursuit behavior. Hand was later indicted for criminally negligent homicide in connection with Reed’s death. Officer Reynaldo Contreras arrived and encountered 52-year-old Patrick Lynn Warren Sr., who was described as being in emotional distress. Contreras initially used a Taser, but it reportedly failed to incapacitate Warren. The officer then opened fire, striking Warren multiple times. Warren was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident, which was captured on video, sparked public outcry and demands for accountability.

On 01/09/2021, just after 9:30 a.m., deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from a residence on Sunburst Road in Victorville reporting unknown individuals attempting to break into the home. The caller was Betty Francois, age 91. Deputies arrived and Francois exited the home holding a shotgun. Deputies issued commands for her to put the firearm down. According to authorities, Francois did not comply and the firearm was pointed toward deputies. A deputy opened fire, shooting and killing her. Later reporting stated that Francois was blind and deaf. The shooting was placed under investigation and no charges against deputies were announced at the time of reporting. The names of the officers were never released.

On 01/09/2021, Phoenix police responded to reports of a disturbance in a parking lot near West Van Buren Street involving Paul Bolden and a woman. According to police accounts, during the incident Bolden took an infant from the woman and entered Van Buren Street. Police said Bolden stopped a vehicle in traffic and remained near the driver’s seat while holding the child. Officers arrived and attempted to get Bolden to put down a firearm. On 01/09/2021 at approximately 4:35 a.m., a Virginia State Police trooper observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 64 in Henrico County. Police said a pursuit followed, reaching speeds well over 100 miles per hour. The vehicle left the roadway and slid down an embankment into the median near mile marker 173. Two troopers approached the vehicle. According to police accounts, Xzavier Deyonté Hill displayed a firearm during the encounter, and troopers opened fire, killing him. A grand jury later declined to indict the troopers involved. Hill’s family filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit challenging the circumstances of the shooting.

Earlier that day, Chicago police had publicly stated that Nightengale was connected to multiple fatal shootings on Chicago’s South Side. Evanston officers located him later that afternoon. According to police accounts, an exchange of gunfire occurred between Nightengale and officers. Officers opened fire, striking and killing him. On January 9, 2021, at approximately 9:41 p.m., deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call at 32 Janice Drive in Pembroke. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with 46-year-old Matthew Oxendine, who was inside a vehicle.

Oxendine had set fire to the interior of the vehicle. He made statements about bleeding out and threatened police. A SWAT team was assembled to assist in negotiations. At approximately 11:51 p.m., Oxendine allegedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the SWAT team. Deputies opened fire, killing him.

The vehicle fire was extinguished, and Oxendine was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed that the object Oxendine pointed at deputies was a toy gun with a wooden stock. He had been unarmed.

On January 9, 2021, 46-year-old Herbert Nixon Flores, wanted for the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend Karen Ruiz in Pacoima, California, was located by law enforcement in Dallas, Texas. As officers approached him in the 2100 block of Amherst Avenue, Flores shot and killed himself.

On 01/08/2021 at approximately 2 p.m., White County sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a residence on Woodland Trail in Sparta related to an incident the previous day involving a traffic stop. According to authorities, when deputies entered the home, Charles Edward Williams exited through the back of the residence. Deputies followed him onto a rear deck area. During the encounter, a deputy opened fire, killing Williams. Prosecutors later stated that Williams was holding a wallet at the time he was shot. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted an inquiry, and the district attorney later cleared the deputy of criminal wrongdoing. On January 8, 2021, at approximately 1 p.m., 25-year-old Mark Anthony Johnson was driving a 2007 Dodge pickup truck eastbound on U.S. Highway 190 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Houston. When Woodville Police Department officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Johnson fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit. While attempting to pass another vehicle on the right shoulder, Johnson lost control, causing the truck to skid across both lanes of U.S. 190. The vehicle left the roadway and struck several large trees, resulting in Johnson's death at the scene.

On 01/07/2021, at approximately 6: 20 a.m., members of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team were executing a high-risk search warrant at a residence located in the 400 block of East Broad Street, Chesaning, Michigan. The warrant was being served on behalf of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET). As the troopers approached the front of the house, John R. Neitling confronted them while armed with a gun. In response, the troopers shot and killed him.This was reportedly the third drug raid at his residence in the past five years. An internal investigation found no violation of departmental policies and the officers returned to work. Neitling was described in his obituary as someone who enjoyed fishing, camping, music, and spending time with family and friends, and he worked at Maximum Roofing among other odd jobs. He is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepdaughter, and extended family.

On the evening of 10/10/2025, the Baytown Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle (BMW) travelling at a high rate of speed on SH-146 near Alexander Drive. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. The chase crossed into Chambers County where deputies joined. Less than a mile later the fleeing vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle near Crystal Boulevard; the male driver of the fleeing vehicle was ejected and died at the scene, while the occupants of the other vehicle were treated for non‐life‐threatening injuries.

On January 7, 2021, at approximately 3 a.m., a driver allegedly ran a stop sign at Atlantic Street and Minnehaha Avenue while driving a stolen Ford Focus at 61 mph in a 30-mph zone upon the driver spotting a St. Paul police officer focusing om him. The officer had noticed the stolen car, confirmed via license plate check that it was stolen the previous day, and escalated to chase that ended when the pursued vehicle crashed into bystander Alison Annen, killing her.

On January 7, 2021, Salem Police officers attempted to arrest 28-year-old Kristopher Allen Rice, who had an outstanding warrant. Rice ran into the Willamette River near Wallace Marine Park. Despite search efforts, he was not located at that time. On January 23, 2021, his body was discovered entangled in brush and partially submerged near the west bank of Wallace Marine Park. The Polk County Medical Examiner determined that there was no evidence of foul play, and the cause of death was presumed to be drowning.

On 01/06/2021, Robert Howard was taken from a residence in the 3500 block of Mark Twain Street in Memphis by on duty Memphis police officer Patric Ferguson. According to court records, Ferguson encountered Howard outside the home while armed with his personal handgun and forced him into the back of a police vehicle. Ferguson then drove Howard less than half a mile to the area of Frayser Boulevard and Denver Street. Howard was later found dead from gunshot wounds. Ferguson was arrested and charged in state court with first degree murder and kidnapping. Federal prosecutors later charged Ferguson with civil rights violations related to Howard’s death.

On 01/06/2021, Ashli Babbitt was inside the United States Capitol building during the breach of the Capitol. Video footage and law enforcement accounts show Babbitt attempting to climb through a broken window leading into the Speaker’s Lobby area near the House chamber. A U.S. Capitol Police officer fired a single shot, striking Babbitt. She was transported from the building and later pronounced dead. The shooting was reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice and by internal Capitol Police investigations, both of which concluded the use of force was justified and no criminal charges would be filed. Babbitt’s family later filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit, which resulted in a settlement with the federal government.

The FBI's Safe Streets Task Force was conducting an investigation in Hartford, Connecticut. During the investigation, a suspect was identified and arrested. A secondary individual, Benicio Vasquez, became involved and exchanged gunfire with officers. New Britain Police Officer Christopher Kiely and an FBI agent shot and killed Vasquez.

On January 6, 2021, Tigard Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance at the Edgewood Manor Apartments near Southwest Hall Boulevard and Southwest Bonita Road. Upon arrival, they found 26-year-old Jacob Ryan Macduff experiencing a mental health crisis and locked inside his pickup truck. During the standoff, officers reported that Macduff was armed with a knife. Officers fired bean bag rounds to break the truck's windshield. On 01/05/2021, an off duty Austin police officer reported a road incident involving Alexander Gonzales Jr while driving in southeast Austin. According to police accounts, the off duty officer said Gonzales pointed a firearm at him from another vehicle. Uniformed Austin police officers later located Gonzales near 2500 Wickersham Lane. Police said officers gave commands for him to exit his vehicle. Gonzales exited the vehicle and moved toward the rear passenger area, where his young son was seated. An officer then opened fire, shooting and killing Gonzales. Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene. A Travis County grand jury later declined to indict the officers involved. The City of Austin reinstated the officers after an internal review. Gonzales’s family filed a civil lawsuit, and the city later agreed to a settlement.

On January 5, 2021, Spokane Police officers were searching for a person connected to a December 27, 2020, homicide. They located Joseph Buskirk driving in North Spokane. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Buskirk tried to escape in his vehicle. Police disabled the vehicle, and after it came to a stop, Buskirk exited the car and allegedly began firing a weapon at officers. Police shot and killed him during the exchange.

On January 5, 2021, at approximately 10:23 a.m., Houston Police Department officers were conducting surveillance on alleged robbers near 16510 North Freeway. Three men arrived at the location in a vehicle. Two of them entered a hotel while the third remained outside. When the two men returned, officers moved in to arrest them. Two of the men attempted to flee on foot, while Jose Guzman allegedly reached for a pistol in his waistband. An officer opened fire, killing Guzman at the scene.

The chase ended near 16005 Terrace Road when the vehicle collided with multiple objects and caught fire. The occupants exited the vehicle; the driver, identified as Vincent Belmonte, fled on foot. During the pursuit, officers allege that Belmonte produced a gun. Police opened fire and killed him. Belmonte's family disputes the police's account, asserting that he was unarmed and posed no threat. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

On January 5, 2021, at approximately 1:43 p.m., Newton Police responded to a 911 call from the owner of "Indulge!", a candy store located at 16 Lincoln Street, reporting a man with a knife inside the store. The individual, identified as 28-year-old Michael Conlon, resided in an apartment above the store. Upon police arrival, Conlon fled to the third floor of the building. Officers attempted to negotiate with him and employed less-lethal methods, including a beanbag shotgun and a Taser, in efforts to subdue him. Despite these attempts, Conlon reportedly advanced towards officers with the knife. Two Newton Police officers opened fire, striking Conlon. He was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On 01/04/2021, shortly after 3 a.m., Payson police officers responded to multiple calls reporting a man behaving erratically near the Town of Payson Community Development building and later near the Bison Cove Apartments. Callers reported the man was talking to himself and was seen near or inside a parked vehicle that did not belong to him. Officers located Michael Romo near the vehicle and attempted to detain him. Police said Romo did not comply with commands to get on the ground. According to police statements, Romo moved toward officers while holding a knife. Officers opened fire, shooting and killing him.
