On 01/18/2021, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies attempted a traffic stop shortly after 10 p.m. Police said the driver did not stop, and deputies escalated a pursuit that continued for nearly fifteen minutes before the vehicle crashed near Hurley Way and Cal Expo Drive outside the Cal Expo grounds. After the crash, deputies attempted to get Robert Stephen Calderon to exit the vehicle. Police said he remained inside and did not comply with commands. Deputies broke a rear window and deployed a police dog into the vehicle. Authorities reported the dog was shot and killed during the encounter, after which deputies opened fire and shot Calderon. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was placed under investigation, and no charges against deputies were announced at the time of reporting.

On 01/2021, Brandon Larson, 34, died after fleeing from police during a foot pursuit in Ketchikan. During the chase, Larson entered a creek and drowned. He was later pronounced dead. Body camera footage released after the incident provided additional insight into the circumstances leading up to his death and the officers’ actions during the pursuit. Authorities stated the incident was reviewed following the release of the footage.

On January 18, 2021, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Toledo Police officers approached Christopher A. Harris, 27, outside a residence in the 2200 block of Fulton Street. Mr. Harris was a man in the vandalism and arson of the Rosary Cathedral earlier that day. Upon noticing the officers, he held a firearm and retreated into his home. Police initiated a standoff. Officers deployed tear gas into the residence. Subsequently, Mr. Harris exited the house with two firearms and fired multiple shots, fatally striking Officer Brandon Stalker, 24, in the head. In response, officers returned fire, killing Mr. Harris.

REASON FOR CHASE: California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a group of dirt-bike riders after riders drove recklessly and against traffic on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Christopher Lee subsequently became a passenger on a dirt bike whose driver fled from CHP officers.
NARRATIVE:
On 01/17/2021, 20-year-old Christopher Lee of Beaumont, Texas, was killed during a California Highway Patrol pursuit on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

During the afternoon, several hundred motorcycle, dirt-bike and all-terrain-vehicle riders traveled through Oakland and San Francisco and onto the Bay Bridge. Shortly after 5:00 p.m., CHP officers encountered a smaller group of approximately 15 dirt bikes on the bridge. According to CHP, riders turned around after encountering officers and began traveling against traffic.

The group exited the bridge into San Francisco using the Sterling Street and Fourth Street ramps, traveled through downtown San Francisco, and then entered the bridge again using the Fremont Street on-ramp, traveling east on the upper deck of the westbound bridge.

Lee was initially operating his own dirt bike. According to CHP, he crashed near the Treasure Island ramp and abandoned that motorcycle. Another rider, 20-year-old Humza Zahoor of Stockton, California, picked Lee up as a passenger on his dirt bike.

CHP officers subsequently pursued the dirt bike carrying Zahoor and Lee. Near the Yerba Buena Island portion of the bridge, Zahoor attempted to evade officers by crossing or jumping a concrete median barrier separating portions of the bridge roadway.

The dirt bike struck the barrier and Lee was thrown from the motorcycle onto the roadway. A pickup truck traveling on the bridge then struck Lee. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office subsequently identified the deceased passenger as Christopher Lee, 20, of Beaumont, Texas.

CHP arrested Zahoor following the crash. He was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of murder and other offenses arising from the fatal pursuit crash.

On 01/17/2021, Avondale police attempted to take Daniel Canales Jr. into custody near 9890 Estrella Parkway in Goodyear. Police said officers were following a vehicle they believed had been stolen and tracked it to a Walgreens near Estrella Mountain Ranch. When officers attempted to arrest Canales Jr., a confrontation occurred. Officers opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later cleared the officers of wrongdoing.

On January 17, 2021, Grant County Sheriff's Deputy Matthew Sneed responded to a domestic situation involving a stabbing at a residence in the 3200 block of South Central Avenue in Marion, Indiana. As Deputy Sneed approached the house, Daniel Young, 25, allegedly drove a Honda Civic toward the deputy. In response, Sneed jumped onto the hood of the moving vehicle and shot and killed Young through the windshield of the car.

Deputies were called around 10:15 a.m. to a shooting in the parking lot of the Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club. When deputies arrived, they found Ely Grimes, 47, of Fredericksburg, with a gunshot wound to the chest. George Batts was still in the parking lot with a handgun. He reportedly refused commands to drop the weapon, pointed the weapon toward deputies, and deputies shot and killed him.

On January 17, 2021, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a Warsaw Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle on US-42 in Warsaw, Kentucky, for speeding. The driver, 31-year-old Josh Hodges of Florence, Kentucky, did not stop. Police escalated a chase during which he lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve and collided with a concrete wall. A passenger, 54-year-old Shanda Marie Withrow of Hamilton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the crash site. Hodges and another passenger sustained injuries and were sent to a hospital.

On January 17, 2021, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Lawton police officers conducted a compliance check at the Lavish Lounge, where 24-year-old Zonterius "Zon" Johnson was celebrating his birthday. During the check, shots were fired from outside the club, with at least one bullet striking the building. Officers observed Johnson exchanging gunfire with an unidentified individual. Johnson fled the scene on foot. Officer Nathan Ronan pursued Johnson into a dark alley. Johnson allegedly produced a firearm. Officer Ronan opened fire, striking Johnson. Johnson was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) conducted an investigation into the incident. The Comanche County District Attorney's Office reviewed the findings and determined that Officer Ronan's actions were justified. Body camera footage from the incident was released to the public.

REASON FOR CHASE: California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Vue attempted to stop a driver for speeding on State Route 70 south of Oroville. The driver continued driving away while Vue pursued him south toward Marysville.

NARRATIVE:
On 01/16/2021, 55-year-old Dawn Loralee Ritter of Marysville was killed when a fleeing driver crashed into her Toyota Tacoma at B Street and 9th Street in Marysville during a California Highway Patrol pursuit.

Shortly after 11 p.m., CHP Oroville Officer Paul Vue attempted to stop a speeding driver on State Route 70 south of Oroville. The driver continued driving away and Vue pursued him toward Marysville.

The pursuit continued into Marysville. CHP Sergeant Howard joined the pursuit on B Street. Seconds after Howard joined, the fleeing driver entered the intersection of B Street and 9th Street against a red traffic signal and crashed into Ritter's Toyota Tacoma as she was completing a left turn from 9th Street.

The impact crushed the cab of Ritter's pickup. Ritter was killed instantly.

The fleeing driver abandoned his vehicle immediately after the collision and ran from the crash scene. California Highway Patrol officers, Marysville Police Department officers and Yuba County Sheriff's Office deputies established a perimeter and searched the surrounding neighborhood.

CHP Valley Air Division officers aboard helicopter H-24 located the driver as he jumped fences and ran through residential yards. The helicopter crew directed officers on the ground to his location on top of an apartment building, where officers took him into custody after a struggle.

Dawn Ritter was a longtime resident of the Yuba-Sutter area and a mother and grandmother. Born in Amarillo, Texas, on 03/03/1965, she spent part of her childhood in Spain and Germany as the daughter of a military family before her family settled in the Yuba-Sutter area. Her obituary described her as someone who loved crafting, baking, spontaneous road trips, panning for gold, picking fruit and, above all, spending time with her family. She was survived by her daughters and grandchildren.

DISPOSITION:
A Yuba County jury convicted the fleeing driver of second-degree murder, reckless evasion, fleeing the scene of a collision, possession of a firearm by a felon, resisting arrest, vandalism and driving on a suspended license. On 05/10/2023, he was sentenced to 21 years to life in state prison.

The pursuing CHP officers were not criminally charged for their role in initiating or continuing the pursuit.

CHP Oroville Officer Paul Vue initiated the traffic stop and pursuit. CHP Sergeant Howard subsequently joined the pursuit on B Street shortly before the fatal collision.

REASON FOR CHASE: Kent police attempted to stop the driver after an officer saw his vehicle rapidly leaving the area of a reported armed robbery at East Hill Market. Police said the description from that robbery was similar to the description from another reported armed convenience-store robbery approximately one hour earlier.
NARRATIVE:
On 01/16/2021, shortly after midnight, Kent Police Department officers responded to East Hill Market in the 23800 block of 108th Avenue SE after a store employee reported a robbery involving a handgun.

According to police, the man had been inside the market before approaching the counter, displaying a handgun and demanding money. Police said he left the store when customers entered. Responding officers believed his description was similar to that provided following another reported convenience-store robbery approximately one hour earlier, during which a store employee reported being threatened with a handgun.

A Kent police officer saw a vehicle rapidly leaving a nearby parking lot and attempted to stop it. The driver continued away from the officer and a police pursuit followed.

At approximately 12:37 a.m., the fleeing vehicle left 132nd Avenue SE and struck a tree at high speed. The driver was ejected from the vehicle. Officers and fire personnel attempted emergency medical treatment, but the 25-year-old Des Moines resident died at the scene.

The January 16 crash is documented in federal fatal-crash data as a single-vehicle fatal collision on 132nd Avenue SE in Kent at 12:37 a.m., involving one vehicle, one person and one fatality. The date, time, city, roadway, single-vehicle configuration and fatality correspond to the fatal pursuit crash reported by Kent police and contemporaneous news accounts.

Police reported that a handgun was found near the driver after the crash. Kent Police also stated that its preliminary review of surveillance video from the earlier reported robbery indicated that the person depicted was the same person who fled from officers before the fatal crash.

Kent Police reported that its preliminary investigation did not indicate that a police vehicle struck the fleeing vehicle before it left the roadway. Because the death occurred during a Kent Police pursuit, the department requested that the King County Sheriff's Office conduct an independent investigation of the collision.

On January 16, 2021, around 11 p.m., Michigan City police attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle that refused to stop. Police escalated a high-speed pursuit. The store clerk reported that an individual had been loitering before approaching the counter, pulling out a gun, and demanding money before leaving. Officers noted the description of the individual matched one from an earlier robbery at a nearby convenience store. A responding officer observed a vehicle rapidly leaving a nearby parking lot. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, initiating a pursuit. During the chase, the vehicle veered off the road at high speed and collided with a tree, resulting in the driver's death.

On 01/15/2021 at approximately 8:15 p.m., Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of gunfire near Ranger Way and Rampart Drive in Carmichael. Upon arrival, deputies found a sheriff’s officer suffering from a gunshot wound. They also found Kershawn Geiger, who had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities stated a 65 year old man had fired multiple shots toward a nearby home. Deputies reported the man was experiencing significant emotional distress related to family issues. Neighbors in the area were evacuated as deputies established a perimeter. Police said the man was hiding inside a shed on the property and was holding a firearm. According to law enforcement accounts, the man threatened deputies and fired shots from the shed during the standoff. On January 15, 2021, Cherokee County deputies were patrolling near County Road 1111 due to reports of recurring burglaries in the area. On January 15, 2021, El Paso Police Department officers responded to reports of a man firing a gun near Interstate 10 and along Thunderstorm Drive. At approximately 11:32–11:40 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021, at the northbound 405 Roscoe Boulevard offramp, a vehicle crashed as a result of a police pursuit. The pursued vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire. The 17-year-old male driver was the sole person reported killed. A female CHP officer suffered a leg injury while attempting to help him; she did not die.The California Highway Patrol had attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not stop and the pursuit ended when the car crashed and caught fire. The unidentified male teenage driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

On January 14, 2021, at around 3:15 p.m., the Brooklyn Park Police Department responded to reports of a man walking through yards in the 7500 block of 83rd Avenue. Initially, a caller reported that this man had broken into his home but then fled. Upon arriving at that location, officers were redirected by another family who said the same man had just entered their home. Several children managed to escape, but the man found a 7-year-old boy hiding in a closet and refused to release him. The man claimed he was armed with multiple guns and would not surrender. After negotiations, the standoff ended around 10:30 p.m. when the man took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot.

Police arrived at a residence to serve warrants on Jeffrey D. Kite for violating a protective order. Kite, who lived at the residence, refused to come out of the home. Police subsequently obtained a search warrant to enter the home and additional arrest warrants for stalking and violation of a protective order. About 9 p.m., Kite stopped communicating with them. Around 3 a.m., officers entered the home and found him hiding in a storage area. Police allege that Kite produced a gun and fired at the officers, who shot and killed him.

On 01/13/2021, officers from the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police pursued a vehicle on I-10 near the Louisiana Avenue exit in Lafayette, Louisiana. Police deployed spike strips, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash. A fatal explosion upon impact caused the car to become engulfed in flames, creating a large fireball.

On 01/13/2021, South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated a pedestrian traffic fatality when a vehicle bystander accidentally drove through the collision scene and struck the dead pedestrian, James Jackson, and continued driving. On 01/13/2021, Kern County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a domestic violence assault. Deputies reported a man left in a vehicle before deputies arrived and deputies later located the vehicle. Deputies reported the man did not follow directions during contact and deputies chased him on foot. Deputies reported they heard a gunshot, found the man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he died at the scene. The sheriff’s office later identified him as Diante Nettles, 43.

On January 13, 2021, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) troopers and Oklahoma City Police Department officers escalated a chase of a stolen Lincoln Navigator up to 115 mph. The vehicle was driven by 17-year-old Vinnie Hamlet, the twin brother of Chris Hamlet, with Chris and a 17-year-old female passenger. Troopers used a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) maneuver, directly causing the SUV to flip multiple times and land in a field near Southwest 119th Street and South Meridian Avenue. Vinnie Hamlet was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Chris Hamlet and the female passenger sustained injuries but survived.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol conducted an internal self-investigation. The findings were presented to the District Attorney's Office, which determined that the deadly pursuit was justified.

On 01/12/2021 just after midnight, Phoenix police officers attempted a traffic stop near Interstate 10 and Baseline Road. Police said the vehicle did not stop and was later located with assistance from a police helicopter near the Arizona Grand Resort area. Antonio Carbajal exited the vehicle and continued running. Officers caught up with him near Arizona Grand Parkway. Police stated that Carbajal had a handgun and that a physical struggle occurred over the weapon. During the encounter, an officer opened fire, shooting and killing Carbajal. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later reviewed the case and cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing.

On 01/12/2021, Lakewood police officers responded to reports of trespassing and a robbery near West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street. Officers encountered Ty Walvatne-Donahey in the area. According to police statements, officers believed he was holding a firearm during the encounter. Officers opened fire, shooting and killing Walvatne-Donahey. He was pronounced dead at the scene. On 01/11/2021 at approximately 6 a.m., Edinburg police officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a residence on Orlando Street. Police stated that when officers arrived, an assault was underway inside the home. According to police accounts, Jesse Daniel Davila moved toward an officer during the encounter. An officer opened fire, shooting and killing Davila. The incident was placed under investigation. Davila’s family later pursued a civil lawsuit, and the City of Edinburg reached a settlement related to the shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered Daryl Dye, who had a knife and was running toward them. Deputies shot and killed him.

On 01/11/2021, Scottsboro Police searched for Randy Atchley after police reported a shooting at a Zaxby’s on John T Reid Parkway that left a man seriously injured. Police reported Atchley left the scene and officers later located him at a home where a standoff developed. Police reported the home caught fire during the standoff. After the fire, authorities reported they found Atchley dead inside the burned structure and later identified his remains.

On January 11, 2021, at approximately 5:16 p.m., Butler County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic violence report in the 6800 block of Yoakum Court at the Lakota Pointe Townhomes in Liberty Township. Junius Thomas, had allegedly kicked in the door of a residence, prompting the female occupant to flee and call 911. Upon arrival, deputies found Thomas armed and "extremely agitated." THE SWAT team was deployed. SWAT officers used an armored vehicle to breach the door. Thomas then appeared in the doorway and raised a gun toward the officers, at which point Deputy Ricky Phillips shot and killed Thomas. A subsequent autopsy revealed the presence of methamphetamine in Thomas's system. Four months later, Officer Phillips shot and injured someone during arrest again. A Butler County grand jury reviewed both incidents and declined to issue an indictment, determining that the use of force was justified.

Deputies then contacted a man nearby who was holding a knife. During the encounter, deputies opened fire, shooting and killing Allen Mirzayan. Mirzayan was pronounced dead at the scene. The stabbing victim was transported for medical treatment. The deputy involved shooting was placed under investigation, and no charges against deputies were announced at the time of reporting.

On 01/10/2021 at approximately 3:37 a.m., Bentonville police officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a family at a residence near NW Bella Vista Road and NW 6th Street. The incident involved a husband, his wife, their two young children, and the husband’s parents. Police reported that the husband’s father was seriously injured and treated by medical personnel. Officers stated that the wife and children were inside the home with Brian Williams. According to police accounts, when officers attempted to make contact, Williams moved toward them while holding a kitchen knife. Three officers opened fire, shooting and killing him. The shooting was investigated, and the district attorney later determined the use of force was justified. No charges were filed against the officers.
