On January 25, 2021, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Columbus police received reports of a man firing shots at vehicles in the parking lot of a Kroger store located at 5800 West Broad Street. The man, later identified as Jordan Garrett Suydam, 26, was reportedly driving a maroon 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Shortly thereafter, additional reports indicated that Suydam had fired shots at individuals near Westgate Park and at a woman walking her dog.

At approximately 12:25 p.m., Franklin Township officers spotted Suydam’s vehicle near Frank Road and Harrisburg Pike. A pursuit ensued, with speeds reaching up to 100 mph and Suydam running multiple red lights. The chase continued until officers temporarily lost sight of the vehicle.

Officers then observed smoke emanating from an area near Phillipi Road and Fisher Road. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle overturned and engulfed in flames. Suydam was inside the vehicle, armed with a long-barreled shotgun. As the fire intensified, ammunition inside the vehicle began to explode, preventing officers from safely approaching. Once the fire was extinguished, Suydam was found deceased inside the vehicle.

Investigations revealed that Suydam was a person of interest in the homicide of his father, Arthur Suydam III, earlier that day in McComb, Ohio.

On 01/24/2021, West Whiteland Police officers responded after an out-of-state relative requested a welfare check on a family inside a home on Mountain View Drive. Officers entered and located four people dead in the basement. Investigators determined all four died from gunshot wounds and preliminary evidence indicated Deepak Kulkarni shot his wife and two children before shooting himself. Caleb McCree, 43, was confronted by officers during a disturbance call at 61104 Airport Road in Slidell, Louisiana. Officers engaged McCree in an altercation, during which they opened fire and killed him. Police did not disclose whether McCree was armed. The circumstances leading to the fatal shooting have been withheld by police. McCree was pronounced dead at the location.

On January 24, 2021, at approximately 2:20 a.m., Alexandria Police Department Officer Zachary Taylor was on duty, driving a marked police vehicle southbound on State Road 9 in Alexandria, Indiana. During this time, Officer Taylor struck Dylan Kelly Stinson, 22, who was on a skateboard. Stinson sustained fatal injuries from the collision.

At approximately 2 a.m. on January 24, 2021, Wichita County Sheriff's deputies observed a silver sedan stopped at an intersection. The driver, later identified as 38-year-old Tyree Kajawn Rogers, began yelling obscenities at the deputies before driving away. Deputies pursued the erratically driven vehicle, which exited onto Fisher Road and spun out of control. Four police vehicles boxed in the sedan, and when Rogers allegedly drove toward the deputies, they opened fire, killing him. The vehicle then struck a guardrail and came to a stop. A female passenger reportedly informed deputies that Rogers had shot and kidnapped her.

On 01/23/2021, two passengers were killed when a Dodge Charger crashed while fleeing from Aurora Police Department officers in Aurora, Illinois.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., Aurora police responded to an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Coventry Place after receiving reports of multiple people with guns in the parking lot. Police said people scattered when officers arrived and a white Dodge Charger rapidly left the property.

Other Aurora officers saw the Charger traveling at high speed on Indian Trail and running red lights. Officers briefly pursued the vehicle.

Police said the Charger traveled through a red light at Lake Street and continued east on Indian Trail. Officers terminated the pursuit and turned off East Indian Trail. Less than a minute later, officers encountered the aftermath of a collision at North Ohio Street and East Indian Trail.

The Charger had collided with a minivan at the intersection. One passenger in the Charger died at the scene. A second passenger was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died shortly afterward. Two occupants of the minivan sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Charger fled from the crash on foot. An Aurora police K-9 team located him several minutes later hiding in the yard of a nearby residence.

Police identified the driver as 19-year-old Kevon Bonner of Chicago. Investigators determined that the Dodge Charger had been reported stolen in December 2020 from Lansing, Illinois. Police reported recovering multiple firearms from the wreckage, including a rifle with a loaded drum magazine and two Glock pistols. Officers also reported finding rifle ammunition on Bonner and a loaded Glock pistol along the route where he fled from the crash.

Aurora Police Department spokesperson Paris Lewbel said the department consulted the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force concerning the two deaths. The task force determined that the fatalities would not be investigated as officer-involved deaths because Aurora officers had terminated the pursuit and turned off East Indian Trail before the fatal collision.

On 01/22/2021, Cocke County deputies responded to a residence at 380 Pierce Rd for a domestic disturbance involving a firearm and encountered an armed individual who refused to cooperate. During contact the person made threats and fired rounds, prompting deputies to withdraw and request tactical assistance. A SWAT team established containment and attempted communication during an extended standoff lasting roughly sixteen hours before entering the home. The individual was found deceased inside from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Reporting indicates the confrontation unfolded within a prolonged police containment environment and the death occurred prior to officers reaching the individual.

On 01/22/2021, Indio Police Department officers responded to reports of a man acting erratically near Cardenas Market on Highway 111 in Indio, California. The individual, identified as 41-year-old Jose Albert Lizarraga Garcia, was observed entering and exiting multiple stores, throwing items, and behaving disruptively. Upon contact, Garcia was physically restrained by several officers. During the restraint, Garcia repeatedly stated, "I can't breathe." A mesh spit hood was placed over his head. Shortly thereafter, Garcia became unresponsive and died while prone and restrained, his head inside of a spit hood.

Deputies from the Citrus County Sheriff's Office responded around 9:45 a.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting a man, Steven Verdone, behaving erratically and running in and out of traffic near the Marathon Gas station at 6241 W Cardinal Street in Homosassa, Florida. Verdone was yelling at people near the locked entrance to the convenience store and attempted to enter before the deputy's arrival. As the deputy exited his cruiser, Verdone approached while armed with a knife. The deputy shot and killed Verdone during the encounter.

On January 22, 2021, around 9:06 a.m., deputies from the Racine County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check request for a residence in the Village of Rochester. The request came from a family member who lived outside of Wisconsin. The home was shared by 30-year-old Matthew T. Vinz and his parents, Terrence G. Vinz, 65, and Debra A. Meagher, 62. Deputies entered the home and began searching for the occupants. Moments later, a gunshot was heard near the deputies. Upon investigation, Matthew Vinz was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The bodies of his parents were later found in the garage.

The driver of a Chevrolet Malibu with gold-colored rims fled a high-speed traffic stop. Officers escalated the chase in Houston, lasting approximately 10 minutes. The chase ended when the driver lost control, crashing into a tree near the 1900 block of Evergreen Drive. The vehicle burst into flames, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 01/21/2021, New York City police officers were stopped at a traffic light in the Wakefield section of the Bronx when they heard a disturbance and calls for help from nearby. Officers exited their vehicle and observed a woman running along the street, followed by David McFarlane, who police said was holding a knife. Officers ordered him to drop the knife. According to police, McFarlane turned toward the officers while still holding the knife, and officers opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was placed under investigation. Reporting later indicated McFarlane had a history of mental health issues, according to family members.

On 01/21/2021, San Jose police shot and killed David Tovar Jr. at an apartment complex on La Pala Drive. Police said officers were attempting to locate Tovar in connection with a homicide and two other shootings in South Santa Clara County. According to authorities, officers encountered Tovar on a second floor landing while they were positioned in a ground level courtyard. Police reported that Tovar was unarmed and that officers believed he was reaching into his waistband when they opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was placed under investigation, and no criminal charges against officers were announced at the time of reporting.

On January 21, 2021, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Grayson County Sheriff's Office deputies Andy Vincent and Jason Luedke responded to a residence at 504 North Main Street in Caneyville, Kentucky, following a tip regarding the whereabouts of 34-year-old Brian Richard Abbott, who was wanted for absconding post-incarceration supervision. Police entered the home and alleged they encountered him with knives. Deputy Vincent fired and struck Abbott three times. Abbott was pronounced dead in his home by the Grayson County Deputy Coroner. On January 21, 2021, around 1 a.m., College Station Police Department officers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Ryan Daniel Stallings. Investigators suspected Stallings was transporting large quantities of drugs. During the stop, Stallings allegedly retrieved a handgun from the center console of his vehicle. In response, Officer Matthew Newton, an eight-year veteran of the department, discharged his weapon, fatally striking Stallings. On January 20, 2021, a male driver was killed following a police pursuit in Fontana, California. Fontana Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle in connection with an ongoing investigation. The driver did not stop. On 01/20/2021, 33-year-old Michael Hayes died following a police pursuit in St. Louis, Missouri. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle they believed to be stolen. The driver fled at high speed. On 01/20/2021, Fresno police assisted a state parole agent who requested help locating Frank Gonzales after concerns were raised about a removed ankle monitor. Officers located Gonzales behind a business near Kings Canyon Road and Maple Avenue. According to police, officers approached him and an encounter occurred during which Gonzales was holding a metal object. Officers opened fire and shot Gonzales. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies later identified Bradley Alexander Lewis in connection with the report. On 01/19/2021, Greeley police observed Christopher Austin Dockery leave a residence in Evans. Police said officers were aware he had an active felony warrant and attempted to stop his vehicle. Dockery did not stop, and officers escalated a brief chase that ended when his vehicle crashed. Police reported that Dockery left the vehicle and entered a nearby gas station while holding a handgun. Officers said he attempted to take a vehicle in the parking lot while they gave commands for him to surrender. During the encounter, officers opened fire and shot Dockery. On 01/18/2021, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies attempted a traffic stop shortly after 10 p.m. Police said the driver did not stop, and deputies escalated a pursuit that continued for nearly fifteen minutes before the vehicle crashed near Hurley Way and Cal Expo Drive outside the Cal Expo grounds. After the crash, deputies attempted to get Robert Stephen Calderon to exit the vehicle. Police said he remained inside and did not comply with commands. Deputies broke a rear window and deployed a police dog into the vehicle. Authorities reported the dog was shot and killed during the encounter, after which deputies opened fire and shot Calderon. On January 18, 2021, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Toledo Police officers approached Christopher A. Harris, 27, outside a residence in the 2200 block of Fulton Street. Mr. Harris was a man in the vandalism and arson of the Rosary Cathedral earlier that day. Upon noticing the officers, he held a firearm and retreated into his home. Police initiated a standoff. Officers deployed tear gas into the residence. Subsequently, Mr. Harris exited the house with two firearms and fired multiple shots, fatally striking Officer Brandon Stalker, 24, in the head. In response, officers returned fire, killing Mr. Harris.

REASON FOR CHASE: California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a group of dirt-bike riders after riders drove recklessly and against traffic on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Christopher Lee subsequently became a passenger on a dirt bike whose driver fled from CHP officers.
NARRATIVE:
On 01/17/2021, 20-year-old Christopher Lee of Beaumont, Texas, was killed during a California Highway Patrol pursuit on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

During the afternoon, several hundred motorcycle, dirt-bike and all-terrain-vehicle riders traveled through Oakland and San Francisco and onto the Bay Bridge. Shortly after 5:00 p.m., CHP officers encountered a smaller group of approximately 15 dirt bikes on the bridge. According to CHP, riders turned around after encountering officers and began traveling against traffic.

The group exited the bridge into San Francisco using the Sterling Street and Fourth Street ramps, traveled through downtown San Francisco, and then entered the bridge again using the Fremont Street on-ramp, traveling east on the upper deck of the westbound bridge.

Lee was initially operating his own dirt bike. According to CHP, he crashed near the Treasure Island ramp and abandoned that motorcycle. Another rider, 20-year-old Humza Zahoor of Stockton, California, picked Lee up as a passenger on his dirt bike.

CHP officers subsequently pursued the dirt bike carrying Zahoor and Lee. Near the Yerba Buena Island portion of the bridge, Zahoor attempted to evade officers by crossing or jumping a concrete median barrier separating portions of the bridge roadway.

The dirt bike struck the barrier and Lee was thrown from the motorcycle onto the roadway. A pickup truck traveling on the bridge then struck Lee. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office subsequently identified the deceased passenger as Christopher Lee, 20, of Beaumont, Texas.

CHP arrested Zahoor following the crash. He was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of murder and other offenses arising from the fatal pursuit crash.

On 01/17/2021, Avondale police attempted to take Daniel Canales Jr. into custody near 9890 Estrella Parkway in Goodyear. Police said officers were following a vehicle they believed had been stolen and tracked it to a Walgreens near Estrella Mountain Ranch. When officers attempted to arrest Canales Jr., a confrontation occurred. Officers opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later cleared the officers of wrongdoing.

On January 17, 2021, Grant County Sheriff's Deputy Matthew Sneed responded to a domestic situation involving a stabbing at a residence in the 3200 block of South Central Avenue in Marion, Indiana. As Deputy Sneed approached the house, Daniel Young, 25, allegedly drove a Honda Civic toward the deputy. In response, Sneed jumped onto the hood of the moving vehicle and shot and killed Young through the windshield of the car.

Deputies were called around 10:15 a.m. to a shooting in the parking lot of the Tuckahoe Motorcycle Club. When deputies arrived, they found Ely Grimes, 47, of Fredericksburg, with a gunshot wound to the chest. George Batts was still in the parking lot with a handgun. He reportedly refused commands to drop the weapon, pointed the weapon toward deputies, and deputies shot and killed him.

On January 17, 2021, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a Warsaw Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle on US-42 in Warsaw, Kentucky, for speeding. The driver, 31-year-old Josh Hodges of Florence, Kentucky, did not stop. Police escalated a chase during which he lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve and collided with a concrete wall. A passenger, 54-year-old Shanda Marie Withrow of Hamilton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the crash site. Hodges and another passenger sustained injuries and were sent to a hospital.

On January 17, 2021, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Lawton police officers conducted a compliance check at the Lavish Lounge, where 24-year-old Zonterius "Zon" Johnson was celebrating his birthday. During the check, shots were fired from outside the club, with at least one bullet striking the building. Officers observed Johnson exchanging gunfire with an unidentified individual. Johnson fled the scene on foot. Officer Nathan Ronan pursued Johnson into a dark alley. Johnson allegedly produced a firearm. Officer Ronan opened fire, striking Johnson. Johnson was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) conducted an investigation into the incident. The Comanche County District Attorney's Office reviewed the findings and determined that Officer Ronan's actions were justified. Body camera footage from the incident was released to the public.

REASON FOR CHASE: California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Vue attempted to stop a driver for speeding on State Route 70 south of Oroville. The driver continued driving away while Vue pursued him south toward Marysville.

NARRATIVE:
On 01/16/2021, 55-year-old Dawn Loralee Ritter of Marysville was killed when a fleeing driver crashed into her Toyota Tacoma at B Street and 9th Street in Marysville during a California Highway Patrol pursuit.

Shortly after 11 p.m., CHP Oroville Officer Paul Vue attempted to stop a speeding driver on State Route 70 south of Oroville. The driver continued driving away and Vue pursued him toward Marysville.

The pursuit continued into Marysville. CHP Sergeant Howard joined the pursuit on B Street. Seconds after Howard joined, the fleeing driver entered the intersection of B Street and 9th Street against a red traffic signal and crashed into Ritter's Toyota Tacoma as she was completing a left turn from 9th Street.

The impact crushed the cab of Ritter's pickup. Ritter was killed instantly.

The fleeing driver abandoned his vehicle immediately after the collision and ran from the crash scene. California Highway Patrol officers, Marysville Police Department officers and Yuba County Sheriff's Office deputies established a perimeter and searched the surrounding neighborhood.

CHP Valley Air Division officers aboard helicopter H-24 located the driver as he jumped fences and ran through residential yards. The helicopter crew directed officers on the ground to his location on top of an apartment building, where officers took him into custody after a struggle.

Dawn Ritter was a longtime resident of the Yuba-Sutter area and a mother and grandmother. Born in Amarillo, Texas, on 03/03/1965, she spent part of her childhood in Spain and Germany as the daughter of a military family before her family settled in the Yuba-Sutter area. Her obituary described her as someone who loved crafting, baking, spontaneous road trips, panning for gold, picking fruit and, above all, spending time with her family. She was survived by her daughters and grandchildren.

DISPOSITION:
A Yuba County jury convicted the fleeing driver of second-degree murder, reckless evasion, fleeing the scene of a collision, possession of a firearm by a felon, resisting arrest, vandalism and driving on a suspended license. On 05/10/2023, he was sentenced to 21 years to life in state prison.

The pursuing CHP officers were not criminally charged for their role in initiating or continuing the pursuit.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
CHP Oroville Officer Paul Vue initiated the traffic stop and pursuit. CHP Sergeant Howard subsequently joined the pursuit on B Street shortly before the fatal collision.

REASON FOR CHASE: Kent police attempted to stop the driver after an officer saw his vehicle rapidly leaving the area of a reported armed robbery at East Hill Market. Police said the description from that robbery was similar to the description from another reported armed convenience-store robbery approximately one hour earlier.
NARRATIVE:
On 01/16/2021, shortly after midnight, Kent Police Department officers responded to East Hill Market in the 23800 block of 108th Avenue SE after a store employee reported a robbery involving a handgun.

According to police, the man had been inside the market before approaching the counter, displaying a handgun and demanding money. Police said he left the store when customers entered. Responding officers believed his description was similar to that provided following another reported convenience-store robbery approximately one hour earlier, during which a store employee reported being threatened with a handgun.

A Kent police officer saw a vehicle rapidly leaving a nearby parking lot and attempted to stop it. The driver continued away from the officer and a police pursuit followed.

At approximately 12:37 a.m., the fleeing vehicle left 132nd Avenue SE and struck a tree at high speed. The driver was ejected from the vehicle. Officers and fire personnel attempted emergency medical treatment, but the 25-year-old Des Moines resident died at the scene.

The January 16 crash is documented in federal fatal-crash data as a single-vehicle fatal collision on 132nd Avenue SE in Kent at 12:37 a.m., involving one vehicle, one person and one fatality. The date, time, city, roadway, single-vehicle configuration and fatality correspond to the fatal pursuit crash reported by Kent police and contemporaneous news accounts.

Police reported that a handgun was found near the driver after the crash. Kent Police also stated that its preliminary review of surveillance video from the earlier reported robbery indicated that the person depicted was the same person who fled from officers before the fatal crash.

Kent Police reported that its preliminary investigation did not indicate that a police vehicle struck the fleeing vehicle before it left the roadway. Because the death occurred during a Kent Police pursuit, the department requested that the King County Sheriff's Office conduct an independent investigation of the collision.

The fatal collision is documented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the federal census of fatal motor-vehicle crashes occurring on public roadways in the United States.
