Aurora PD arrived at an apartment to arrest Kilyn Lewis for a previous incident. SWAT officer Michael Dieck found him working on his car and rummaging in the trunk of his car. Two unmarked cars pulled up. It is believed that he was not aware of them behind him. When police yelled to get on the ground he reportedly yelled "I don't have nothin'! I don't have nothin'!" and raised his hand holding a cell phone. SWAT Officer Matthew Dieck shot and killed the unarmed man. Officer Dieck had previously also fatally shot Tyrell Jones in 2018. Officer Dieck was cleared again.

On May 22, 2024, Cape Fear Regional Special Teams SWAT Team and Wilmington PD went to the home to conduct a search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. Wilmington PD applied a tactical distraction device on a window. Malik Samuell Thompson allegedly opened fire, hit a SWAT officer in the ballistic vest. Police shot and gravely injured him. He died six days later on 05/28/2024 in the hospital from his injuries. Fentanyl, Xanax and cocaine were found in the home.
