City : Jackson

State : Mississippi
Agency : Jackson Police Department
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Driver killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Tina Carter Sawyer, a 35-year-old Black woman, was involved in a crash after reportedly being chased by Jackson police. Police escalated the chase to speeds of at least 80 mph, leading to the fatal crash. Her vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire, resulting in severe destruction and her death. Police officers, including reportedly the police chief himself, drove past the crash scene without rendering aid as Sawyer died. The internal self-investigation remains ongoing, with no confirmation on whether the police were involved in the chase. Mississippi police policy requires officers to render aid at crash scenes.
.
The investigation into Tina Carter Sawyer's crash is being handled by Jackson Police Department's Internal Affairs Division. Additionally, the case is set to be reviewed by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), with findings ultimately forwarded to the Mississippi Attorney General's Office. This indicates both internal and external oversight to examine the officers' involvement and their failure to render aid at the scene of the crash.
