Deputies responded around 12:52 a.m. to a call about a suicidal man, later identified as Christopher Knels, at a residence on Interstate Avenue North in East Fairview. Other individuals in the residence were safely evacuated. Deputies attempted to contact Knels without success and called in the Williams County Negotiation Task Force. The task force reached Knels by phone, but he later exited the residence and pointed a firearm toward law enforcement. A McKenzie County deputy opened fire, striking Knels several times. He retreated into the residence, where deputies found him and attempted medical aid. Knels was transported to Sidney Health Center and pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered near his body. The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

On June 2, Memorial Villages officers attempted to pull over a vehicle lacking tail lights. The driver sped away, and despite spotting the vehicle a second time, officers did not activate pursuit due to department policy. The driver then ran several red lights on Westheimer Road, collided with multiple vehicles near Gessner, and continued eastbound. At Fondren and Westheimer, he crashed into another car, struck a pole or building, and his car burst into flames. Officers attempted to extinguish the fire, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Multiple occupants in other vehicles were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police claim that they called off the chase just before the crash.

Officers detained a woman found inside the station, while a man inside the suspicious vehicle fled eastbound at a high rate of speed. Police initiated a pursuit along 95th Street. During the chase, the driver lost control and collided with another car at the intersection of 95th Street and Campbell Avenue. Emergency responders transported the driver to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries. The other motorist sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized. Evergreen Park Police Department is conducting the crash investigation in coordination with Cook County authorities.

As officers approached, a Latino male exited the home and opened fire. Officers returned fire. A female officer was shot and hospitalized in stable condition. The man was shot and taken to a hospital where he died. The shooting is under investigation by the Texas Rangers, El Paso Police Crimes Against Persons Unit, and Internal Affairs.

On June 1, 2025, Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic violence call at a residence on Still Lake Drive. Outside, they located a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was treated on scene and transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in serious condition. A man remained inside the residence, refused to exit, and was reported to be armed. The Cherokee Multi-Agency SWAT team was activated, bringing a militarized multi-jurisdictional force to the scene.
Officers established a containment perimeter with armed positions and armored vehicles for cover. Negotiators attempted to establish contact for several hours using loudspeakers, while tactical units staged for a potential forced entry. After repeated attempts to secure surrender failed, SWAT escalated by deploying chemical irritants into the home capable of causing severe respiratory distress, intense burning of eyes and skin, and forced disorientation. The irritants were delivered to flush the man out and break resistance.
When no response was observed, SWAT deployed a camera-equipped drone into the residence to conduct an interior search under armed cover. The drone relayed live video to the command post, revealing the man inside with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tactical officers entered to confirm the scene was secure. Sikes exited the vehicle and reportedly fired at officers, striking a female officer multiple times. She was transported to a Charlotte hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Sikes then fled on foot into a wooded area. A large manhunt followed, involving K9 units, drones, and a helicopter from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The man, identified as 32-year-old Jacob Lyle Epple, entered a black sedan and drove away, prompting a police pursuit through Ocean Beach. The chase ended at the intersection of Ebers Street and Bermuda Avenue when Epple's vehicle collided with a black Jeep.
