On July 20, 2024, officers A. Luu and T. Huynh of the Houston Police Department responded to an armed disturbance call at a gas station in the 3100 block of South Dairy Ashford. Upon arrival, they encountered a 27-year-old male who had fled on foot and was later found at the intersection of Westheimer and Dairy Ashford. As the individual fled, he dropped a knife from his backpack, picked it up, and continued running toward a nearby cemetery. Officers Luu and Huynh pursued him and gave repeated commands to drop the weapon. The individual allegedly charged at the officers, still holding the knife, and both officers opened fire, striking and killing him. Despite efforts to administer first aid, the male was pronounced deceased at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. The incident is being investigated by the Houston Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

On July 20, 2024, at approximately 7:22 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies were flagged down by civilians in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven store in the 7600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood. The civilians reported an attempted robbery by a man, later identified as 33-year-old Cody Dodd-Thompson, who was fleeing the scene on foot. Deputies followed Dodd-Thompson and attempted to detain him near the 1100 block of Gardner Street. Dodd-Thompson did not comply, produced a knife, and ran south on Gardner Street. During the foot pursuit, Dodd-Thompson stopped running and turned toward one of the deputies while armed with a knife in his right hand. The officer shot him. Dodd-Thompson was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A folding knife with an approximate four-inch blade was recovered at the scene.

On July 18, 2024, at approximately 9:35 a.m., deputies from the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check at 37813 Road M, north of Mancos, Colorado. The call was made by John Thompson's sister, who expressed concern for her disabled mother, Thompson's elderly mother, residing with him. Earlier that morning, at 6:45 a.m., the La Plata County Sheriff's Office attempted to locate Thompson after he reportedly pointed a gun at a La Plata County resident and fled in a gray Dodge pickup truck. Upon arrival, deputies observed Thompson in the driveway. He approached his gray Dodge pickup, retrieved a large-caliber rifle, and advanced toward the deputies in a threatening manner. In response, deputies discharged their firearms, striking Thompson. Despite immediate medical aid, Thompson, 42, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Neither deputy was injured during the incident. The 22nd Judicial District Attorney's Office later cleared the deputies of potential charges, determining that criminal charges against them were not warranted. The officers were cleared.
