On 05/10/2024, at approximately 11 p.m., officers from the Hallandale Beach Police Department and deputies from the Broward County Sheriff's Office pursued a 2016 Dodge Charger suspected in an armed carjacking. The vehicle, driven by a 17-year-old male, traveled northbound on Interstate 95, reaching speeds of up to 135 mph. Reports indicate that the fleeing vehicle reached speeds of approximately 135 miles per hour during the chase. The pursuit ended at the intersection of West Copans Road in Pompano Beach, Florida, when the Charger ran a red light while attempting a left turn. At the same time, Patricia Schmelz, a 68-year-old bystander, was proceeding through the intersection on a green light in her 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. The Charger crashed into Schmelz' vehicle, resulting in a T-bone crash. Emergency responders transported Schmelz to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

On May 10, 2024, Ceres Police Department officers responded to a report of a man brandishing a knife at family members in the 3400 block of Dirk Court. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Alexander Yepez Ortega, had an outstanding warrant for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. Upon police arrival, Ortega fled through residential yards and was later found hiding in a vehicle on 6th Street. When officers attempted to detain him, Ortega exited the vehicle and attacked a female officer with a knife, injuring her arm. In response, officers shot Ortega, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The incident is under investigation by the Ceres Police Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office.

On May 9, 2024, San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a pedestrian, identified as 32-year-old Nicholas Robert Contreras, being struck by two vehicles near Mariposa Road and Locust Avenue in Victorville. Upon arrival, deputies found Contreras armed with a knife. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon, Contreras advanced toward the deputies, prompting them to open fire. On May 9, 2024, at approximately 1:30 PM, Chandler Police responded to a domestic disturbance call in the area of McClintock Road and Chandler Boulevard. Upon arriving, officers were directed to the backyard where 45-year-old Ruben Felix Alejandro Lopez was reportedly behaving erratically. After a 30-minute standoff, Lopez charged at officers with two large knives. In response, three officers fired at him, fatally wounding him. The investigation is ongoing, and the Chandler Police Department is working with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
