OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On March 23, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety officers responded to a 911 call reporting a partially naked man armed with a knife at the Plaza Del Rey mobile home park, located at 1225 Vienna Drive. The caller, later identified as 19-year-old Emmanuel Perez Becerra, was experiencing a mental health crisis and had contacted emergency services on himself. Upon arrival, officers encountered Perez Becerra, who was naked from the waist down and holding a kitchen knife. Officers repeatedly commanded him to drop the weapon. Initially, Perez Becerra walked away but then turned and advanced toward Officer Kevin Lemos, disregarding commands to stop. Officer Lemos discharged his firearm twice, striking Perez Becerra. Officers administered first aid until paramedics arrived. Perez Becerra was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. Officer Lemos was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome. Perez Becerra's family reported that he had been struggling with mental health issues, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
