On March 10, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a deputy from the Stone County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic violence call at the Dollar General store located at 1543 U.S. 49 in Perkinston, Mississippi.

Upon arrival, the deputy encountered 52-year-old Perry L. Stephens Jr., who reportedly fired a gun, striking the deputy in the arm. The deputy opened fire, and in the ensuing exchange of bullets, it was not immediately clear who shot Stephens. Authorities "believe" that Stephens died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Autopsy results should have clarified this but were not released by police.

Additionally, a woman, 44-year-old Kimberly D. Kennedy, was found deceased at the location and is believed to have been shot by Stephens.
