On June 18, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., John Zook, 40, contacted 911, reporting that he was experiencing a mental health crisis and had ceased taking his medication. Officers from the Wayne Police Department responded to his residence at Newberry Square Apartments on Michigan Avenue near S. Wayne Road. Upon arrival, officers found Zook bleeding from self-inflicted wounds and armed with a kitchen knife. Despite multiple verbal commands and two attempts to subdue him with a Taser, Zook advanced toward the officers. In response, an officer discharged their firearm, resulting in Zook's death at the scene. Zook's 4-year-old child was present in the apartment during the incident but was unharmed.
