On 06/15/2024, Auburn Police Department SWAT officers responded to a residence on Russell Avenue in Auburn following reports of an armed individual barricading himself inside a home. The individual, identified as Brian Woodbury, 43, reportedly refused to surrender during a prolonged standoff.

During the incident, police deployed tear gas and other non-lethal tactics to encourage Woodbury to exit the residence. At some point, a fire broke out, engulfing the house in flames. After the fire was extinguished, officers discovered Woodbury deceased inside the burnt structure.

The cause of Woodbury's death remains undetermined and is under investigation. The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office is working to determine the origin of the fire, and the Androscoggin County District Attorney's Office is overseeing the review of law enforcement actions during the standoff.
