Matthews was wanted in connection with the deaths of two individuals in Knoxville, Tennessee, and had been tracked across several states. According to authorities, when US Marshals arrived at the motel to arrest him, a gunshot was heard. Matthews was found in his motel room, where he had reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
