On July 8, 2024, Alaska State Troopers responded to South Kasilof Beach in response to a report that Kirk Medak was allegedly threatening someone with a harpoon. Upon arriving at the scene, Medak was confronted by Officer Gabriel Holman. Medak reportedly pointed the harpoon at the officer, prompting Holman to discharge his firearm, fatally striking Medak.

The incident occurred in a remote area, and Medak was pronounced dead at the scene. The Alaska State Police is investigating the use of deadly force.
