On 08/29/2024, at approximately 5:48 p.m., Brently Allen Tucker, 36, was killed when his Honda CBR600 motorcycle collided with another vehicle on Lexington Road at Woodgrove Drive in Athens while an Oglethorpe County sheriff’s deputy was pursuing him. The pursuit began in neighboring Oglethorpe County and continued across the county line into Athens-Clarke County.

According to the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office, the encounter began on Smokey Road when a deputy encountered Tucker riding the motorcycle. The publicly available accounts reviewed for this update do not specify the particular traffic violation, warrant, crime or other reason the deputy initially attempted to stop Tucker.

The deputy pursued Tucker from Oglethorpe County into Clarke County. Athens-Clarke County Police Department officials said their officers did not participate in the pursuit.

Oglethorpe County Sheriff David Gabriel said the deputy terminated the pursuit shortly before the fatal collision. Gabriel said the deputy turned off his emergency lights and siren. According to Gabriel, Tucker was looking backward toward the deputy around that time.

Tucker continued west on Lexington Road. Near Woodgrove Drive, an eastbound Honda Pilot was making a left turn when Tucker’s motorcycle struck the passenger side of the Pilot. Tucker died at the scene.

The Georgia State Patrol Post 32 in Athens investigated the collision, with assistance from the agency’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.

Funeral announcements identified Tucker as Brently Allen Tucker and documented services for him in September 2024.
