On August 29, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Coffeyville Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on a Ford pickup truck driven by 33-year-old Derik J. Trotter near the intersection of 4th Street and Poplar Place in Coffeyville, Kansas. Trotter was connected to an active investigation, and officers intended to serve a search warrant for items in his possession. Despite repeated inquiries, law enforcement has not disclosed the specifics of the investigation or the reasons for the search warrant, leaving unanswered questions about the circumstances leading to the encounter.

As officers attempted to place Trotter in handcuffs, he allegedly resisted. Officers engaged in a physical altercation. Two officers fired Tasers at him. Trotter fought back. Finally, one officer opened fire, striking Trotter. Trotter was transported to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
