On 08/29/2024, shortly before 3 p.m., Coffeyville Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on a Ford pickup driven by Derik J. Trotter, 33, near 4th Street and Poplar Place in Coffeyville. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported that Trotter was connected to an active investigation and that officers intended to detain him while serving a search warrant for items in his possession.

Three Coffeyville police officers were present, and two approached Trotter's pickup. According to the KBI's account, officers attempted to place Trotter in handcuffs, and police alleged that he physically resisted and attempted to escape. Two officers deployed Tasers during the encounter.

The KBI alleged that Trotter continued physically resisting after the Tasers were deployed. One Coffeyville police officer then fired multiple rounds, striking Trotter. The KBI's initial release did not report that Trotter possessed or used a firearm during the encounter.
