Event : Killed by police during no-knock SWAT raid

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

n 08/28/2024, shortly after 7 a.m., an Omaha Police Department SWAT team entered Cameron TaVarus Ford's home near North 78th Street and Redick Avenue while executing a no-knock search warrant connected to a narcotics and firearms investigation. Federal law-enforcement personnel were also involved in the operation.
.
Officer Adam Vail was the first SWAT officer through the doorway. Police body-camera recordings did not provide a clear visual recording of the critical moment because officers' ballistic shields obstructed the cameras. Audio and still images from the recordings were subsequently released.
.
Vail told investigators that Ford emerged from a bedroom and moved rapidly toward him without showing his hands. Vail said he feared for himself and the officers behind him and fired one round from approximately five feet away, striking Ford in the chest. Ford was unarmed when Vail shot him.
.
Officers began CPR and Ford was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he died shortly afterward. Police subsequently searched the residence and reported recovering fentanyl, marijuana, cash and firearms. The presence of weapons elsewhere in the residence did not change the fact that Ford was unarmed during the fatal encounter with Vail.
.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine reviewed the shooting and announced on 09/05/2024 that he would not criminally charge Vail, concluding that Vail's use of deadly force was lawful under Nebraska law based on Vail's stated belief that Ford posed an immediate threat.
.
The shooting nevertheless produced significant consequences within the Omaha Police Department. Police suspended the use of standard-entry no-knock warrants while reviewing the practice. An internal affairs investigation separately concluded that Vail violated department policy and procedures during the raid. Police Chief Todd Schmaderer recommended that Vail be terminated, emphasizing that the administrative finding was separate from the prosecutor's criminal-law determination.
.
In November 2024, a Douglas County grand jury returned no indictment against Vail in Ford's death.
.
The City of Omaha ultimately upheld Schmaderer's recommendation and fired Vail in March 2025. Despite his termination for the policy violations surrounding Ford's killing, Vail was subsequently hired by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office as a civilian court-security officer, a position in which he was permitted to carry a firearm and Taser.
.
In 2025, the Nebraska Crime Commission considered an informal complaint concerning Vail but dismissed it. The commission's executive director said the circumstances did not satisfy the statutory requirements for action against his law-enforcement certification.
.
Ford was born on 03/29/1987 and died on 08/28/2024. Funeral services were held at Fort Street Church of Christ in Omaha, followed by burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND
.
Adam Vail was the Omaha SWAT officer who shot the unarmed Ford. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer determined after an internal affairs investigation that Vail violated department policy and procedures during the fatal raid and recommended his termination. The city ultimately fired Vail in March 2025. Vail was subsequently hired by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office as a civilian court-security officer authorized to carry a firearm and Taser.
