OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/28/2024, at approximately 9:50 p.m., a 14-year-old boy died after a Pearland Police Department pursuit that began on Country Place Parkway and continued northbound onto State Highway 288. Police said the teenager had taken his mother's Nissan sedan in an attempt to run away from home.

The specific initiating traffic violation was a red-light violation. A Pearland police officer saw the Nissan go around a stopped vehicle and run a red light at Country Place Parkway and Hughes Ranch Road. Family members were following the teenager in another vehicle and flagged down the officer, pointing toward the Nissan. The officer then attempted to stop the teenager and began pursuing him onto Highway 288.

Approximately a mile and a half after the pursuit began, the teenager lost control of the Nissan on northbound Highway 288 near the Beltway 8 interchange and crashed into the center concrete barrier. He got out of the wrecked vehicle and ran west across the highway's northbound main lanes and HOV lane toward the southbound side. The pursuing officer lost sight of him as he ran across the freeway.

Approximately five minutes later, Pearland dispatchers received a report that a pedestrian had been struck in the southbound lanes of Highway 288. Officers arrived and discovered that the pedestrian was the same 14-year-old they had been pursuing. A motorist had struck him while he attempted to cross the southbound lanes. The driver who struck him and other witnesses remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Pearland police officers performed CPR before an ambulance transported the teenager to Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, where he was pronounced dead. The Pearland Police Department investigated the fatal incident under case number 24-007561.
