OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On August 28, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Iowa State Patrol troopers attempted to stop a speeding Hyundai Elantra on Interstate 235 near 31st Street in Des Moines. The driver, a 16-year-old male, did not stop. This escalated a pursuit during which the vehicle exited the interstate and proceeded eastbound on Grand Avenue, traveling on the wrong side of the road.

Officers continued the chase even as the vehicle drove against traffic. Troopers reportedly discontinued the pursuit due to safety concerns. Moments later, the Hyundai collided with a Jeep at the intersection of 7th Street and Grand Avenue, near the Marriott Hotel.

Chad Nicholson, a 16-year-old passenger in the Hyundai, was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other occupants of the Hyundai, including the driver, sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe and were transported to local hospitals. The driver and passenger of the Jeep were treated for injuries and released.
