Event : Killed by police during domestic violence call

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/24/2024, shortly before 10:00 a.m., Huntsville Police Department officers responded to a domestic violence call at an apartment in the 6200 block of Rime Village Drive. The man subsequently killed was identified by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency as Naimmikal Wayne Sanders, 38, of Decatur.
.
Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard subsequently said that security-camera footage from inside the apartment showed Sanders allegedly entering the woman's apartment and holding her at gunpoint while her toddler was inside. Broussard said the woman was able to escape while the first Huntsville police officer was outside the apartment.
.
According to Broussard, Sanders allegedly followed the woman outside and fired multiple times at her in the presence of the responding officer, striking her twice. Broussard said Sanders continued firing and then turned the firearm toward the officer. The officer opened fire, striking Sanders. Sanders died at the scene.
.
The woman survived and was transported to Huntsville Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Initial reporting from the scene created significant confusion about what had happened. Huntsville police initially told local media that a man had been taken into custody following a shooting and barricade situation. Two days later, ALEA disclosed that Sanders had actually been shot and killed by police. Residents interviewed afterward expressed frustration about the conflicting information initially provided to the public.
.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigation took over the investigation at Huntsville Police Department's request. The shooting was captured on the officer's body-worn camera, while events preceding the police shooting were also captured by a security camera inside the apartment.
.
On 08/28/2024, Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard announced his preliminary determination that the officer's shooting of Sanders was legally justified. Broussard said the available video evidence showed the officer confronting an active shooting and stated that he did not expect criminal action against the officer.
.
A friend and former classmate of Sanders, Tekita Holmes, publicly disputed the characterization of the man she knew, telling local media that she had been with Sanders only hours before his death and did not believe he would have committed the actions attributed to him. She described being shocked by both his death and the police account of what occurred.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Huntsville police officer who shot and killed Sanders has not been publicly identified.
