OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/20/2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m., agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit and Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies went to Christopher Bly's home in the 300 block of Don Rich Drive near Carrollton to execute a search warrant connected to an ongoing GBI child exploitation investigation.

Carroll County deputies knocked on the door and Bly, 40, opened it. According to the GBI, Bly immediately retreated into the residence and deputies followed him inside.

The GBI reported that Bly produced a handgun and fired. The gunshot struck Bly and Carroll County Sheriff's Office Investigator Taylor Bristow. Subsequent investigation and autopsy evidence determined that Bly's gunshot wound was self-inflicted. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that no law-enforcement officers fired their weapons during the encounter.

Bly died at the residence. Bristow was shot in the face and critically wounded. He was flown by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, underwent emergency surgery and remained in intensive care. Bristow died from his injuries on 08/23/2024, three days after the shooting.

The GBI continued executing the search warrant after the shooting. Agents reported seizing multiple electronic devices from Bly's residence and subsequently alleged that the devices contained child sexual abuse material.

The GBI's Atlanta Regional Office investigated the shooting and announced that the completed investigative file would be submitted to the Carroll County District Attorney's Office for review.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Taylor Bristow was the Carroll County Sheriff's Office investigator struck by the same gunshot that killed Bly. Bristow died from his injuries three days later on 08/23/2024.
