On 08/24/2024, Beaumont police shot and killed 42-year-old Manuel Arteaga while officers were responding to a reported disturbance in the 1800 block of Harriot Street in Beaumont, Texas. Police were dispatched at approximately 8:20 p.m.

According to Beaumont police, officers were dealing with people involved in the original disturbance when Arteaga approached the officers from behind carrying a running chainsaw. Police alleged that Arteaga continued toward the officers with the chainsaw and that two officers fired their weapons, striking him. Beaumont EMS pronounced Arteaga dead at the scene.

Arteaga's family disputed the police account of the moments immediately preceding the shooting. A family member told local media that Arteaga had been cutting logs in the neighborhood and went to investigate the disturbance while carrying the chainsaw. The family member said the chainsaw was idling and maintained that Arteaga was attempting to shut it off and put it down when police shot him.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the original disturbance on two aggravated-assault counts, including one involving family violence. Arteaga was not identified by police as the person whose alleged conduct prompted the original disturbance call.

The shooting was reviewed by a Jefferson County grand jury in September 2024. The grand jury determined that the shooting was justified and declined to take action against the two Beaumont officers who shot Arteaga.
