On 08/16/2024, Barry Fields Jr., 15, was killed while riding in the front passenger seat of a Mercury Sable being pursued by Blythe Police Officer Thomas Ray on Deans Bridge Road. His younger brother, Casey Fields, 13, was riding in the back seat.

The pursuit began at approximately 7:53 p.m. when Ray clocked the Mercury traveling 71 mph in a 55-mph zone and attempted to stop it for speeding. The driver continued driving and Ray pursued.

As the Mercury approached Bath Edie Road, it entered the southbound lanes while continuing north against traffic. Georgia State Patrol reported that Ray stopped pursuing rather than following the Mercury into the wrong-way lanes.

Approximately one mile later, the Mercury collided head-on with a southbound pickup truck near Etterlee Road and burst into flames. Barry, Casey and driver Marcus Dunbar, 19, were killed.
