OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/11/2024, deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office were responding to an active domestic violence call on Mississippi Highway 12 in Steens with emergency lights and sirens activated. According to Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins, one deputy had already passed 85-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Jackson while responding to the emergency. A second deputy attempted to pass Jackson's vehicle when Jackson began making a left turn, and the deputy's patrol vehicle struck the driver's side of her vehicle. Both vehicles overturned, and the deputy's patrol vehicle came to rest in a wooded area off the highway.
Jackson and the deputy were extricated from their vehicles using hydraulic rescue equipment and transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle. Jackson died a short time later from her injuries. The deputy was treated for injuries and later released from the hospital.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol assumed responsibility for the crash investigation. Public reporting through 2026 identified no criminal charges against the deputy, no publicly announced disciplinary action, and no publicly reported civil lawsuit or settlement arising from the collision.
