On 08/11/2024, at approximately 12:31 p.m., officers with the Long Beach Police Department responded to the 100 block of Kuyrkendall Place after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance. According to city officials, the incident began after an argument between 43-year-old Justin Brown and his parents inside the residence. Brown armed himself with a handgun and fired a shot inside the home. His parents escaped safely before officers arrived.
As officers arrived, Brown came outside and fired at responding officers. At least one officer returned fire, and Brown retreated back into the residence, where he barricaded himself. Officers established a perimeter, evacuated nearby homes, and requested assistance from multiple agencies, including SWAT personnel. Negotiators made repeated attempts to contact Brown during a standoff that lasted nearly four hours.
After communication efforts were unsuccessful, officers entered the residence shortly before 5:30 p.m. and found Brown deceased inside the home.
