OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/11/2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m., Columbus Division of Police officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress on Worthington Street near Ohio State University's south campus. The caller reported that an armed man was inside the residence. Officers encountered 33-year-old Asante Taj Omar Miller, who fled the home while carrying a handgun. Officers gave repeated commands for Miller to drop the weapon, but police reported he did not comply. During the encounter, officers fired at Miller, who continued fleeing and forced his way into another residence on the 100 block of West 8th Avenue.
A SWAT team responded and surrounded the residence while negotiators attempted to resolve the situation. The standoff lasted approximately five hours. After obtaining a search warrant, officers entered the residence and encountered Miller inside. Additional shots were fired during that encounter. Miller was later found dead inside the residence. No officers were injured. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for the independent investigation into the shooting.
Subsequent court records identified the decedent as Asante Taj Omar Miller. Public reporting through 2026 identified no criminal charges against the involved officers, no publicly announced disciplinary action, no civil settlement, and no public release identifying the officers who fired their weapons.
