OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/11/2024, at approximately 1:20 a.m., Athens-Clarke County Police Department officers responded after a 911 caller reported that a man was waving what the caller described as a "machine gun" near a Verizon store at the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road. Officers located 26-year-old Marquavious Sims carrying a firearm. Sims ran across Lexington Road into the parking lot of a QuickTrip convenience store while officers pursued him on foot.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers repeatedly ordered Sims to drop the firearm. Investigators reported that Sims turned and fired at the pursuing officers. Two officers returned fire, striking Sims multiple times. Officers rendered emergency medical aid until EMS personnel arrived. Sims was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation at the request of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Sims' body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy, and the completed investigative file was submitted to the Clarke County District Attorney's Office for review.
Sims' family publicly questioned the police account and requested release of body-worn camera footage, stating they wanted a complete accounting of the shooting. Public reporting through 2026 located no criminal charges against the involved officers, no publicly announced disciplinary action, no publicly reported civil settlement, and no public release identifying the officers who fired.
