OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/09/2024, a Marion Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a moving traffic violation on Route 16 in Marion. The driver continued approximately 1½ miles into Smyth County before stopping near the intersection of Route 16 and Hatchery Drive. Deputies from the Smyth County Sheriff's Office responded to assist with the traffic stop.
During the stop, officers issued the driver a traffic summons. According to investigators, the driver became upset after receiving the citation and opened fire on the officers. Smyth County Sheriff's Deputy Hunter Reedy was fatally wounded, and Deputy Michael Fedorchuk was seriously injured. Multiple officers returned fire, striking Timothy Wayne Goodman. Goodman was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Virginia State Police recovered a firearm from Goodman's vehicle and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
The Virginia State Police obtained warrants charging Goodman with one count of aggravated murder, four counts of attempted aggravated murder, and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Those charges were never adjudicated because Goodman died from the gunshot wounds he sustained during the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.
Deputy Hunter Reedy had served with the Smyth County Sheriff's Office for seven years and was survived by his wife and three children. Deputy Michael Fedorchuk recovered from his injuries. Public reporting through 2026 identified no criminal charges or disciplinary action against the officers who returned fire.
