OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/10/2024, at approximately 3:35 a.m., Phoenix police responded to reports that a man was firing a handgun and threatening several people near 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street. Officers learned the man had left the area in a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle near 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road and attempted a traffic stop based on the reported shooting. Imani Jackson stopped, exited the vehicle, and ran on foot while officers pursued.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers saw Jackson repeatedly reaching toward his waistband while he ran. Officer Vicente Rodriguez fired at least one round, striking Jackson. Officers took Jackson into custody, rendered emergency medical aid, and summoned the Phoenix Fire Department. Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun near where he fell. Officer Jeremy Lemos was also listed as an involved officer.
On 08/23/2024, the Phoenix Police Department released body-worn camera footage and surveillance video of the incident as part of its critical incident transparency process. Jackson's family publicly questioned the shooting after viewing surveillance video, stating he appeared to have his hands raised while initially walking away from officers and requesting a full accounting of the encounter.
Public reporting through 2026 identified no criminal charges against Officers Vicente Rodriguez or Jeremy Lemos, no publicly announced disciplinary action, and no publicly reported civil lawsuit or settlement arising from the shooting.
