OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/08/2024, at approximately 2:51 p.m., Irvine Police Department officers responded to Green Tree Lane after multiple 911 callers reported that a man armed with a knife was chasing and stabbing a woman in the street. Responding officers arrived and observed 37-year-old Paul Parvea Montazer actively attacking 72-year-old Parvin Montazer in the driveway of her home with a knife.
According to the Irvine Police Department, officers repeatedly ordered Paul Montazer to stop the attack and drop the knife. Police stated that he turned toward the officers while still armed and advanced in their direction. Officers fired, striking Montazer. Officers immediately rendered medical aid to both Montazer and the stabbing victim until Orange County Fire Authority personnel arrived. Paul Montazer and Parvin Montazer were both pronounced dead at the scene. A knife was recovered at the scene.
Investigators determined that Parvin Montazer was Paul Montazer's mother. Irvine police stated there were no additional suspects and classified the incident as a domestic violence-related homicide followed by the police shooting.
In September 2024, the Irvine Police Department released body-worn camera footage, 911 recordings, and surveillance video from the incident as part of its Critical Incident Community Briefing process. The video showed officers arriving while the stabbing was still in progress, issuing repeated commands, and then firing when Montazer advanced toward them while holding the knife.
Public reporting through 2026 located no criminal charges against the involved officers, no publicly announced disciplinary action, no publicly reported civil lawsuit filed by the family arising from the shooting, and no public identification of the officers who fired the fatal shots.
