OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On August 8, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Summit Police Department officers were conducting a routine checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue in Summit, Mississippi. As a vehicle approached the checkpoint, the passenger, identified as 25-year-old Usher Leonard, opened fire on the officers, fatally wounding Officer Troy Floyd.

McComb Police Department officers Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts arrived promptly and engaged Leonard in a shootout. Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the exchange. Leonard was shot and killed at the scene.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an inquiry into the incident. Upon completion, the findings will be shared with the Attorney General’s Office for review.
