OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/08/2024, officers with the Summit Police Department were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue in Summit. During the checkpoint, a passenger in an approaching vehicle opened fire on officers, fatally wounding Summit Patrolman Troy Floyd. McComb Police Department officers Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts responded to assist after the shooting.
The passenger, later identified by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation as 25-year-old Usher Leonard, fled from the checkpoint area. Officers Harvey and Roberts located Leonard a short distance away near a grocery store, where an exchange of gunfire occurred. Both McComb officers were wounded. Leonard was struck by police gunfire and died at the scene. Both injured McComb officers were transported to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation assumed responsibility for the investigation into both the fatal shooting of Patrolman Floyd and the subsequent police shooting of Leonard. Investigators collected evidence and later submitted the completed case to the Mississippi Attorney General's Office for review.
