OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/08/2024, officers with the Raton Police Department responded to a report of a domestic violence incident at a residence in the 1000 block of Country Club Road. Investigators determined that Jacob Leonard Sanchez was wanted in connection with the domestic violence investigation, and officers attempted to take him into custody. Sanchez barricaded himself inside the residence, prompting a prolonged SWAT response.
The New Mexico State Police SWAT Team and crisis negotiators responded to assist. Negotiators made repeated attempts over several hours to persuade Sanchez to surrender peacefully. According to New Mexico State Police, the standoff ended after officers entered the residence, where an officer-involved shooting occurred. Sanchez was struck by gunfire. Officers rendered emergency medical aid until EMS personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau assumed responsibility for the independent investigation into the shooting.
