On 08/08/2024, at approximately 8:18 p.m., an off-duty Beverly Hills Police Department officer was driving near the southbound Interstate 405 Roscoe Boulevard off-ramp in North Hills when the officer encountered two men engaged in a physical fight. The officer was not responding to a call but stopped to intervene after witnessing the altercation.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, one man was armed with a handgun and the other was armed with a metal pipe. The off-duty officer exited his vehicle and attempted to intervene. During the confrontation, the officer fired, striking the armed man. The man, later identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as 25-year-old Tomas Ramirez, died at the scene. A handgun was recovered near his body. The second man was detained by responding LAPD officers for questioning.
The Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation because the shooting occurred within LAPD jurisdiction. The Beverly Hills Police Department placed the involved officer on administrative leave pending completion of the criminal investigation and a separate internal administrative review.
