OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/08/2024, at approximately 7:42 p.m., officers from the Auburn Police Department encountered 51-year-old Scott R. Demonte during an investigation into child sexual exploitation at the Melone Village housing complex in Auburn, New York. During the encounter, Mr. Demonte produced a handgun, pointing it briefly at the officers before turning it on himself. He discharged a single round, inflicting a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.

An officer fired one round during the incident, but it did not strike Mr. Demonte. Demonte was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation by the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, and the New York State Attorney General's Office. Findings will be reviewed by the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.
