OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/08/2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., members of the Auburn Police Department, assisted by the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, were conducting an investigation into alleged child sexual exploitation at the Melone Village Apartments on Lansing Street. During the investigation, officers encountered 51-year-old Scott R. Demonte of Fayetteville outside an apartment.
According to investigators, Demonte produced a handgun and pointed it at officers. One Auburn police officer fired a single round toward Demonte. Investigators later determined that the officer's shot did not strike him. Demonte then shot himself once in the head with his own handgun. Officers immediately rendered medical aid and he was transported to a local hospital, where he died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division led the investigation with assistance from the New York State Police, the Cayuga County District Attorney's Office, and the New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation. Investigators publicly stated that the evidence showed Demonte died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and that the single round fired by the Auburn officer did not hit him.
The involved Auburn police officer was placed on administrative leave while the investigation proceeded. Public reporting through 2026 identified no criminal charges or disciplinary action against the officer, and the officer's identity has not been publicly released. I also found no publicly reported civil lawsuit arising from the incident.
