OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/07/2024, at approximately 6:20 p.m., Mesa Police officers responded to an apartment complex near Main Street and Roosevelt Road after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident. The initial caller reported that a man was stabbing himself. While officers were responding, additional 911 callers reported that the same man had stabbed his mother inside the apartment.
Officers located 35-year-old Brandon Franklin Kizer outside the apartment armed with a large knife. According to Mesa Police, officers repeatedly ordered Kizer to drop the knife while attempting to negotiate with him. Officers also deployed less-lethal munitions, including bean bag rounds and pepper-ball rounds, but police reported they were ineffective. Investigators stated that Kizer began moving back toward the apartment where another family member was believed to be inside, prompting officers to open fire. Kizer was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother was found inside the apartment suffering from stab wounds and was transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
The Gilbert Police Department led the investigation under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT) protocol. Four Mesa police officers were identified as involved in the shooting, although their names were not publicly released. No officers were injured.
A review of reporting through 2026 located no public release identifying the involved officers, no criminal charges or disciplinary action against the officers, no publicly reported civil lawsuit or settlement arising from the shooting, and no significant public protest or family campaign challenging the official account.
