OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/07/2024, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop a driver wanted on felony warrants, including aggravated kidnapping. When deputies activated their emergency equipment, the driver accelerated away and deputies pursued south into Harris County.
The driver entered the intersection of the North Freeway frontage road and West Road at a high rate of speed and ran a red light, striking a Toyota Camry. The impact forced the Camry onto the sidewalk and into a METRO bus stop, where it struck 61-year-old Carrie Mae Mitchell as she waited for a bus. Mitchell died at the scene.
After striking Mitchell, the fleeing vehicle continued onto Interstate 45, traveled the wrong way on the freeway, collided with a Montgomery County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle, and was eventually stopped by law enforcement.
Mitchell's daughter, Keandra Bogan, publicly questioned why deputies continued the pursuit through a heavily traveled commercial area after identifying the driver. She said the family was considering legal action while also stating that she forgave the driver. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office stated that the pursuit complied with department policy, which permits deputies or supervisors to terminate a pursuit at their discretion.
