OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/06/2024, Kern County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 6700 block of Highway 178 in Onyx to investigate a reported violation of a domestic violence restraining order. Deputies learned that 25-year-old Austin Springer had multiple felony warrants and was staying inside a camping trailer on the property.
Deputies attempted to contact Springer for approximately 30 minutes using loudspeakers and by telephone. During the encounter, Springer exited the trailer holding what deputies believed was a handgun. Deputies ordered him to drop the weapon and moved to cover. Springer then pointed the weapon toward deputies, and Deputy Josh Cain fired, striking Springer. Springer retreated into the trailer after being shot.
Additional deputies responded, established a perimeter, and deployed an armored vehicle and a drone. After repeated announcements, deputies entered the trailer and found Springer dead. The weapon recovered beside him was determined to be a black Crosman CO₂-powered BB gun. He was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m.
Deputy Josh Cain was placed on critical incident leave while the investigation proceeded. The Kern County Sheriff's Office later released body-camera footage and other critical incident video. On August 30, 2024, the Sheriff's Incident Review Board determined the shooting was within department policy.
