OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/05/2024, a Dallas police officer driving a marked patrol vehicle was traveling eastbound on Elam Road in the 8700 block while responding to a service call without emergency lights or siren activated. Twenty-year-old Aresly Jaramillo attempted to cross Elam Road near Cedarcliff Drive after passing in front of two vehicles waiting to turn left. The patrol vehicle struck Jaramillo in the far-left lane. The officer stopped immediately and rendered first aid until Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel arrived. Jaramillo was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died on 08/06/2024 from her injuries.
On 08/14/2024, Jaramillo's family announced plans to pursue a claim against the City of Dallas under the Texas Tort Claims Act. The family's attorney stated dash-camera footage showed the patrol vehicle was speeding while responding to a call that did not require emergency lights or sirens. The family contended the City and Dallas Police Department were negligent and also called for installation of pedestrian crosswalks near Crawford Memorial Park. Publicly available records have not identified the officer, and no criminal charges or disciplinary findings involving the officer have been publicly announced.
