OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/17/2024, a Greensboro police officer observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued driving away at a high rate of speed, and police pursued. The fleeing vehicle reached speeds estimated at approximately 130 mph. At the intersection of East Cone Boulevard and North O. Henry Boulevard, the fleeing vehicle collided with a Greensboro police patrol vehicle responding to assist in the pursuit. The vehicle caught fire after the collision. Fourteen-year-old passenger Brandon Bowie Jr. died at the scene. Two other juvenile passengers, 14-year-old Kenyan Saxton-Reese and 15-year-old Derrion Legrand, also died. The driver and the pursuing officer were transported to hospitals with serious injuries.
Subsequent investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol determined the responding patrol vehicle was traveling approximately 76 mph in a 35 mph zone and that its emergency lights and siren were not activated when it entered the intersection. Former Greensboro Police Officer Melina Ashley Jensen resigned from the department and was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in connection with the crash.
