OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/01/2024 at approximately 5:11 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Withers was conducting speed enforcement on Interstate 70 when a white BMW SUV passed his location traveling approximately 128 mph. Trooper Withers entered the interstate and attempted to catch up to the vehicle but was unable to close the increasing distance. He radioed ahead to the Emery County Sheriff's Office for assistance.
An Emery County deputy located the BMW and attempted a traffic stop. The BMW continued driving east on Interstate 70 while law enforcement pursued. During the pursuit, the driver encountered slower traffic and drove into the highway median to pass other vehicles at high speed. The pursuit covered less than 20 miles.
Near mile marker 160, the BMW left the roadway, rolled multiple times and ejected both occupants. Driver Matthew Koehler died at the scene from injuries sustained in the rollover. Passenger Jasmine Green also died at the scene.
The Utah Highway Patrol investigated the collision with assistance from the Emery County Sheriff's Office. Authorities identified the decedents on August 5, 2024, as Matthew Koehler, 26, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jasmine Green, 34, of Henderson, Nevada.
